A very fun commission I got to do last month! Something a bit different, I don’t often work from imagination so it was interesting to see how the process went as it’s been so long since I’ve worked that way. I met the now owner of the piece last year when she purchased a painting, and this summer her husband reached out wanting to commission a painting as a birthday gift for her. I don’t get to paint chickens nearly as often as I’d like to and it was great to go to farms to collect reference material and put this together. I’ve been really taken with lime green this summer - the color you get when light passes through leaves - and I think I like how it worked with the blues and reds in the rest. Hopefully it’s enjoying its new home!

I did this one in just two passes at the end of July while we were experiencing the wildfire smoke from Canada. I think it goes without saying that wildfires impact people in a terrible way, but they affect the light like nothing else and I’ve come to anticipate the red sun and blue atmosphere we get between July and August every year, and I do enjoy documenting it. I think this could have had another pass, but I didn’t want it to lose its immediacy. This piece and many others will be on display at Rodney Pratt Frame Shop & Gallery in historic New Castle at the end of September through October.

Another no-blue limited palette, ivory black, titanium white, lemon yellow, chrome green, yellow ochre, and transparent red oxide. So neat to see how blue ivory black can read when set on a warm base.

Bank Swallows. 6” x 12” oil on panel.

Another bird panel. I’m so pleased with how this one came out. Sometimes you get really lucky and everything combines exactly as you pictured it. These are bank swallows, also known as sand martins, and they live in river banks. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to watch a family of them fledging over the river by my work. The light was reflecting off of the river just wonderfully, and gave them this really beautiful glow. Swipe to the end to see my reference!! Framing this one and a few others this weekend in preparation for the second weekend of @rehobothartleague’s Outdoor Fine Arts and Fine Craft Show on August 8th and 9th.

One of the foxes we’ve had living in the back yard this summer. I’ve never been one for bright colors but I’ve been enjoying this intense chartreuse color lately. This and more are for sale this weekend at @winterthurmuse’s Artisan Festival!

In just a week I’ll be a vendor at the Artisan Market at Winterthur and wanted to share a sampling of what will be available. The market will be July 17-19 - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - and I have my fingers crossed for good weather! I’ve been working constantly to get work made, finished, and framed for this and I can’t wait to actually share it. The market located in northern Delaware, right by the PA border and just north of Wilmington. Advanced tickets are required but if you’re in the area I would highly recommend making the trip to come say hello to me and many amazing artists! 🫶

*Repost because I want the full image up lol. Saltmarsh sparrow. 4” x 8” oil on panel. I’ll be selling this panel and many others in a few weeks at @winterthurmuse Summer Artisan Market!

If you’re here from some of my recent still life paintings, hello and thank you. I also paint birds and landscapes :) This is a very special bird. I exclusively paint landscapes and wildlife that I’ve taken my own references photos of, and this is my one exception. The saltmarsh sparrow is an endangered sparrow that nests in salt marshes in the Eastern US. It has faced severe population drops in the past few decades and is at risk to become extinct within the century. I’ve never seen one in real life, but I hope to some time this summer. I think it’s a beautiful little bird. I’m working on rolling out a print shop that will donate to conservation funds - and this guy will be included whenever that drops.

“White-Breasted Nuthatch” 6” x 6” oil on tinted oil-primed panel.
-
Love this little guy. The reference photo I used for this was the first photo I’ve ever taken of a white-breasted nuthatch. He was originally upside down on a tree limb, but I rotated the composition to read more clearly. They can often be found climbing trees at odd angles. This is part of a series of arts and crafts-inspired “tile” paintings I’ve been working on. The panels are a labor of love and take about two weeks to prepare start to finish.
