This boy was a gift to me from the Lord. He brought me such great joy and so many challenges that helped us become better humans.
Thanks, Anthony, for staying close and including me in your short life.

El Niño is here, and Humboldt Bay is already feeling it. 🌊

Our tide gauge at North Spit has been reading about a foot above the tide tables every day for the past month. Part of that is sea level rise we’ve already locked in. The rest is warm El Niño water arriving early, with more on the way.

➔ What El Niño is (and isn’t)
➔ The Kelvin wave headed up our coast
➔ This winter’s king tide dates for Humboldt Bay
➔ Where the forecast numbers come from
➔ What to do now

King tides plus a higher ocean plus a winter storm is how low-lying neighborhoods flood. The highest sea levels of the year land during the November and December King Tides. Now is the time to get ready.

AB 2440 is officially law!

Governor Gavin Newsom @cagovernor, has signed AB 2440, marking an important milestone for the implementation of Prop 28 and California’s historic investment in arts education.

AB 2440 provides clearer guidance for schools and strengthens transparency and accountability around how Prop 28 funds are used.

The new law:
    • Aligns Prop 28-funded arts education programs with California’s Arts Standards and Arts Education Framework, helping ensure these investments support high-quality arts learning.
    • Makes school-site spending plans public, including information about how each school plans to use its Prop 28 allocation and any approved waivers.
    • Increases transparency around actual spending by requiring annual Prop 28 expenditure reports to be submitted and publicly posted.
    • Strengthens school-site accountability by requiring districts, beginning in 2027–28, to certify that Prop 28 requirements are being implemented at every school they serve.
    • Protects each school’s share of Prop 28 funding when funds are pooled across multiple schools.

Getting here took real collaboration. Thank you to Governor Gavin Newsom @cagovernor, for signing AB 2440; Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi @asmmuratsuchi, for authoring the bill and bringing partners together; Austin Beutner @austinforla for working to strengthen the final measure; and our partners at the California County Superintendents Arts Initiative @cacountyarts, EdTrust-West @edtrustwest , and the California Music Educators Association @calmusiced for their partnership throughout this process.

Create CA is proud to have been part of this collaborative effort. Now the work continues to turn California’s historic investment into meaningful, high-quality arts education opportunities for students in every community. by @abc_etcetera

It’s a strange existence to feel so untethered and bereft and blessed all in the same moment. Moment after moment. Again and again. by @abc_etcetera

We joined the @leadershiprc Class of 2026 for a session on leadership in times of disaster: our North Coast risk fingerprint, the recovery operations we’ve partnered with communities on from Rio Dell to King Salmon, and a candid conversation about this winter’s El Niño and what it means for us.

The heart of the session was an interactive long-term recovery exercise, and it surfaced the truth at the center of this work: recovery is never fully funded, but it can be fully connected. Participants closed the gaps not with money but with what their organizations already hold, a space, a crew, a contact, a referral, building a mutual aid network in real time.

That’s what a COAD is: the room, connected before the disaster. Grateful to @leadershipredwoodcoast for engaging with this work.
Humboldt COAD membership is free.
