Abdo Zin Eldin is a Cairo- and Amsterdam-based film director and multidisciplinary artist, first developed in response to the Egyptian upheaval of 2011. He has been working with vulnerable communities and cultures in Egypt — moving between the spiritual, the rural, and the urban — with the urgency to capture beings, times, and worlds that the ruling discourse has deemed forgotten and that were threatened with disappearance.

During his residency Abdo is researches and experiments with the boundaries between documentary and fiction. He summons ghosts and historical elements rendered fictional within the very documentary to create liminal realms that conjure dialogues between the living and the dead, the past and the present, and interrogate architecture as a repository of power, memory, and haunting. The images, objects, and sounds captured and collected become the raw material that shapes his work and provokes the medium whether film, sound, sculpture, and/or performance.

Sculptural multi-screen installation with a sculpture by Ahmed Abu Amra, Egytpian peasant and self-taught sculptor.

The social dilemma between tradition and modernity in contemporary Egyptian society is at the core of the sculptural multi-screen installation Sakkoura (2026) by Abdo Zin Eldin. Working across urban Cairo and rural communities along the Nile Valley, Zin Eldin documents the myths, rituals and daily lives of those who inhabited the shores that flooded annually before the construction of the dam. Zin Eldin describes the Aswan Dam as a necessary evil: one caused by politics that resulted in a wager for independent political survival that is no longer in place.

Today, as children grow up next to controlled waters, only the oldest generations remember ways of life before the dam. A statuette of the deity Hapy, the god of inundation, a-gendered and abundant, anchors the installation that diverts in three separate flows. The work’s multiple screens show scenes of contemporary Egyptian life: in the first, children gather by a small river dam in the Village of El Deer in rural upper Egypt and inform each other about the sakkoura, a mythological creature that devours young people; in the second, the artisan Ahmed Abu Amra creates a gypsum replica of the sculpture of Hapy to keep fresh water flowing and available; in the third, the labyrinthine water distribution networks threading through Cairo’s sprawl are activated by hands that reach for taps in apartments, where water pressure is a matter of neighbourhood power and pump politics. In a country with limited resources and a rapidly expanding population, access to water depends on how much is invested in individual, localised electric pumps, competing with neighbours. The installation invokes a divine ritual, contrasting the tranquillity of the Nile’s sacred waters with the reality of its resources becoming something to be managed, distributed and fought over.

Showing SAKKOURA صاكّورا this Friday, 19 June from 18:00 at @framerframed — part of a group exhibition curated by @angelsmiralda and initiated by @suatogut, alongside other great artists and my friend and colleague at @rijksakademie, @ashfikarahman47.

Sakkoura صاكّورا is a film, sculptural, and sound spatial installation named after the myth of the spirits of the drowned in the Nile, as told by the children of Deir el-Mahrousa. It draws on fables and stories from the ancient, far upper-Egypt countryside village of El Deer in Qena, and on the water infrastructure and distribution systems in the crowded residential areas of Cairo — where green PPR pipes and water pumps become givers of life to millions of people, and without which life would be impossible.

The work includes a sculpture of the ancient Egyptian deity Hapy, made by Uncle Ahmad Abu Amera, a peasant and self-taught artist from Qena (see second photo).

Our band @galalalive — with musicians @date.fka.jochem, @karam.abdulrahman_, @cremersroger, and @diegocanadasax — will also be performing a live set called Hay حيّ to open the show.

On Sunday 17 May, 16:00–18:00, we open Conditions of Presence at Bradwolff Projects — an exhibition where images resist immediate recognition, lingering instead as something elusive and unresolved.

In the work of Abdo Zin Eldin, the boundaries between sculpture, film, sound and performance continuously shift. His practice moves between the spiritual, the rural and the urban — tracing worlds, voices and forms of presence on the verge of disappearance.

His sculptures feel like remnants of ritual or architectural fragments of memory: fragile, charged and animate. Materials carry traces of time, the body and history. What emerges remains suspended between fiction and document, between the living and the absent.

Conditions of Presence brings together works that resist fixed interpretation. Through sculpture, sound, textile, video, installation and drawing, meaning unfolds through fragments, interruptions and resonances.

Featuring works by Atousa Bandeh, Hamza Badran, Golrokh Nafisi, Bahar Noorizadeh, Reyhan Lál, Saman Mahdavi, Sam Samiee and Abdo Zin Eldin.

THE COW’S COMPLAINT (شكوى البقرة), the new documentary feature by current resident **Abdo Zin Eldin (@abdudo) and Mahdy Abo Bahat, will have its World Premiere at Cinéma du Réel 2026 (cinemadureel), the 48th International Documentary Film Festival in Paris, taking place **March 21–28**.

This is the first feature film by the duo.
