The Lost Harmony of Nature
Organic mixed-media
7ft by 4ft
2024

The Lost Harmony of Nature is a powerful large-scale, organic mixed-media artwork that confronts the devastating consequences of human activity on the planet. Through symbolic composition and rich, tactile layers, this piece serves as both a warning and a call to action—challenging the viewer to face the environmental crises of deforestation, industrialization, pollution, and climate degradation that have fractured the once-sacred balance between humanity and nature.
At its core, the work captures the fading memory of coexistence—a visual echo of the harmony that once existed between people and the natural world, now disrupted by our relentless pursuit of economic progress at the expense of ecological well-being. It urges reflection on the often-overlooked impact of environmental degradation on human health, particularly in marginalized communities disproportionately affected by pollution and resource exploitation.

Methodology & Materials

Created using a unique blend of conventional and non-conventional materials, this artwork pushes the boundaries of traditional visual art while remaining rooted in environmental symbolism. The diverse materials enhance both the aesthetic experience and the thematic depth of the piece.

Conventional Materials:

Oil Colors: Provide rich pigmentation and expressive blending to convey mood and movement.
Canvas: A durable, textured surface that supports layered application.
Linseed Oil: Enhances the flow, gloss, and longevity of oil pigments.
Enamel Paint: Introduces vivid highlights and a glossy finish for contrast and emphasis.

Non-Conventional & Organic Materials:
Sawdust: Applied for texture, suggesting decay and the physical remnants of deforestation.
Tree Bark: Brings an earthy, layered aesthetic—representing what remains of vanished forests.
Charcoal Lumps: Used in both drawing and assemblage, adding rawness and expressive contrast.
Tree Branches: Integrated for structural symbolism, connecting directly to the theme of lost ecosystems.
Heavy Wooden Board: Serves as an alternative to canvas, offering a strong foundation for heavier organic Photo shared by Saidu Abdulmumin Degri on October 27, 2024 tagging @artpartner, and @zaritafashionandartsfusion. taken in Abuja, Nigeria by @abdul.big.art

The quiet fading of our collective heritage and the persistence of unsustainable practices continue to befall our ecosystem, threatening both our identity and the planet’s balance.

The abstract surfaces of this work carry holes as metaphors—each opening tells a story; a scar, a silence, or a forgotten story.

Buried in Waste is a mixed-media work that examines the consequences of environmental neglect and humanity's complex relationship with waste. Through material, process, and form, the work reflects on how our unsustainable habits continue to impact the natural world and ultimately return to affect our own lives.
The work is constructed using discarded and repurposed textiles, including Ankara fabrics, cotton materials, and other found fabric remnants. These materials carry traces of everyday life and consumption, transforming objects that might otherwise be considered waste into a visual language of reflection and responsibility. The use of African textiles is intentional; they represent cultural identity, community, and the people whose lives are deeply connected to the environment. The fabrics become both a symbol of human presence and evidence of the material footprint we leave behind.

The canvas functions as a metaphor for the environment itself—a surface that sustains, supports, and contains life. Rather than remaining intact, the canvas is physically torn and ruptured. Through these openings, masses of fabric forcefully emerge from beneath the surface, bursting outward into the viewer's space. This intervention is not merely aesthetic; it is a direct representation of the consequences of environmental abuse. The damaged surface suggests a landscape under pressure, unable to contain the accumulation of waste and the effects of unsustainable living.

The protruding textiles create a physical tension between concealment and exposure. What has been buried can no longer remain hidden. The waste we generate does not simply disappear once discarded; it resurfaces in different forms through pollution, environmental degradation, flooding, contamination, and the disruption of ecosystems. By allowing the materials to erupt through the canvas, the work visualizes this unavoidable return.

As an artist, I am interested in confronting reality rather than escaping it. My practice responds to social and environmental conditions that shape
