How often Russians use curse words

One thing that still surprises me is how often Russians use swear words in everyday conversations. Whether they’re happy, frustrated, angry, shocked, excited… there’s somehow a swear word for every emotion.

The most common one I hear? “Бл*ть”

I can rarely have a conversation with a younger Russian without hearing it at least three times. At this point, I’m starting to think “блять” is just punctuation.

Trying to learn the Russian language has been a humbling experience. The first time I heard «футболка», I was like… “Football?” Then I found out it means T-shirt. 😂

And this keeps happening. I hear a Russian word that sounds familiar in English, my brain gets excited because I think I understand… only to find out I was completely wrong. 😭

I recently came across a food spot where everything on the menu costs just 99 rubles, and honestly, I had to see what that was about.

I ordered a few things: chicken nuggets, Margherita pizza, strawberry lemonade, pancakes with strawberries and syrup, fried chicken breast fillet, and chips.

Let’s start with the pancakes. I wasn’t expecting much, but the strawberry syrup really brought them to life. It added just the right amount of sweetness and made them one of the more enjoyable things I tried.

The strawberry lemonade was another surprise. My expectations were pretty modest, but after taking a sip, I was pleasantly surprised. For 99 rubles, I really couldn’t complain.

But the Margherita pizza was easily my favorite. The combination of the melted cheese and that satisfying cheesy bite made it the standout for me. I kept going back for another slice.

The fried chicken breast fillet, on the other hand, didn’t really leave much of an impression. It wasn’t bad, but there was nothing particularly memorable about it either.

Overall, if you’re on a tight budget and just want something affordable to satisfy a craving, this place is worth checking out. You’re not coming here for fine dining, but considering that everything costs only 99 rubles, I’d say you get pretty decent value for your money.

I find it funny that, more often than not, when a Russian stranger hears me speaking English, they assume that I’m American because of my skin colour.

It’s been quite a surprising experience that I’ve had to go through on multiple occasions, before letting them know: “Я из Нигерии”

I asked a Russian friend to recommend a spot with good food, and somehow, I ended up at Сыроварня.

First of all, I absolutely loved the ambience. The plants, the lighting, the interior; everything just gave the restaurant such a feel-good atmosphere.

And I have to give them credit, the menu had an English version. As someone still learning Russian, that was very thoughtful.

For my appetizer, I had bread with olive oil. I added some chilli to it, and surprisingly… I loved it!

Then came the borscht, which was served with lard and Borodinsky bread. I was pretty indifferent about the bread and lard, it wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t spicy enough for me.

But the borscht itself? I finally understood the hype. The flavour was really good. My only issue was the consistency. I’m used to thicker soups, so this was much thinner than what I normally enjoy.

Then I ordered beef stroganoff — strips of beef in a creamy sauce.

And honestly… that one didn’t work for me.

I had a few spoonfuls, but the creaminess started making me feel nauseous. I asked for some chilli pepper, which definitely made it better, but I still couldn’t finish it.

So, will I be trying borscht again? Absolutely.

Beef stroganoff? I think that window has officially closed.

But overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Сыроварня. Great atmosphere, interesting food, and definitely an experience worth having.

My order breakdown:

Борщ с говядиной - 750 rubles
Бефстроганов - 1,190 rubles
Морс Клюква 1л - 590 rubles
Чили перец 20 гр - 50 rubles

With a budget of 6,000 rubles, you should be able to go on a date here.
