no one really teaches you what grief truly is until it happens to you. you have a plan with this person, to travel to more places, to celebrate more birthdays and holidays together. you dream of milestones and major life moments where you expect this person to be there with you.

what I didn’t realize is that grief doesn’t aways begin when someone leaves. sometimes it can start long before that, while all those plans still exist.

you see, there’s that feeling that no one really tells you about: grieving someone who is still alive. my dad battled with cancer for a year and a half, and my mom was by his side every step of the way. through sickness & in health. my mom was with him until his very last breath.

where was I? well, I was in Los Angeles, having a flight already booked to go back to Edmonton. I was mid-packing.

this is where I knew my dad’s higher self came in to protect me one last time, in his last hour of life.

I spoke to my dad on FaceTime 30 minutes before he passed. before we hung up, I asked him to hold on until I got to Edmonton. “I’m packing, I’m coming. Hold on, dad.”

in hindsight, him passing before I even stepped foot on the plane was his way of protecting me. I’m not as strong as my mom, and he knew I wouldn’t have been able to handle it, seeing him like that, watching it happen.

My dad protected me.
He protected me until his very last breath.

Because that’s what dads do, they protect their daughters.
They protect their family.
And my dad was just that, a protector.

Alberto isn’t suffering anymore.
Alberto’s soul and spirit will forever live on, with my mom, with me, with all of us.

David,
12 years ago, I woke up and received a call telling me you passed. I froze. I didn’t know how to react. Did I just get news that my best friend, my soul tie brother, the only person who truly SAW me, just died?
That… that’s not possible… but the heart surgery was successful? We were too young. Oh God please let this be a joke? This can’t be real. His heart is fine now…. Right???
I’m pretty sure I dissociated and blacked out that morning because I literally do not remember anything until I got into my car.
When I got into my car that morning, the first song that came on the radio was Touch The Sky (yeah yeah, I know, problematic Kanye…) but then the next song immediately after that was Good Morning (yeah, I know, we really liked Kanye back then okay?)
12 years later and I can’t help but think back now and realize something…
David, that was YOU talking to me through music wasn’t it? You always spoke to me through music with your raps and freestyles and your random playlists. The day you died, you came to me through song to tell me that it’s okay. That you’re okay. That I will be okay. That you’re still here, with me. (‘Come up to the spot looking extra fly’ is exactly you).
Anyway, I couldn’t help but reflect back to June 10, 2013 this morning. I can’t believe it took 12 years for it to click in my brain… but that was all YOU.

12 years is a long time without you, David.
But you’re not really gone are you?
My guardian angel, I see you clocking me and checking me when I’m having a moment and my Spotify will randomly play Hustlin’ by Rick Ross... especially when I’m strictly listening to Taylor Swift 😑🤣

Signs and syncs are everywhere and I’m sorry it took me 12 years to receive your message dude 😅🎶
