Two years ago I got the opportunity to ski in Iceland with @elevenexperience to shoot content for the @gopro HERO13 launch video. Funny enough, I never really shared anything from this trip. I capture a lot, not necessarily with the intent to share it, but more so to hold onto those memories and relive them later, whether it’s a beautiful sunset, a moment with close friends, or the emotions I feel when I’m experiencing something magical.

I recently revisited the content from the trip on the ASUS ProArt PX13 GoPro Edition and finally turned some of those memories into a little something.

Comparing focal lengths of different Micro Four Thirds lenses. There’s a 2.7x crop on M43 lenses when using M1P ILS, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get wide angle shots, you just have to adjust your frame of reference.

Your standard HERO camera or Mission 1 Pro fixed lens is pretty similar to the output of the 4mm fisheye that you see here, while your iPhone 1x camera is similar to the 7.5mm, and a FujiX100IV lands somewhere around 12mm. taken in California by @abekislevitz

This trail really feels the seasons 🍂 I realized I had some POV shots from all 4 seasons taken over the years and wanted to see what they looked like all lined up. Seeing how different it felt during winter was quite the scene change!

GoPro didn’t make an action camera with interchangeable lenses. It made a micro cinema style camera that excels where other cameras aren’t well suited.

Example uses: Going in your backpack or jacket pocket during ski/bike days, hard mounting to objects for mounted product or BTS shots, or anything else where the typical mirrorless rig is too big. by @abekislevitz

I’ve been shooting @gopro Mission 1 Pro ILS with a bunch of different lenses and setups, and one question I keep seeing is: “Why wouldn’t you just use a bigger camera?”

Here are four situations where, for me, this setup makes more sense than just about anything else.

Shooting 4K-120 Open Gate here on a Viltrox 56 which is a 168mm equivalent.

Going on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to @cmh_heli with @calebfarro this past year was the perfect example of where this setup excels.

The mountains and scenery are so incredible that part of me wants to bring every camera I own, but I also want to enjoy the experience and ski my face off. Thankfully, I had this kit in my backpack. It didn’t slow me down or weigh me down, and I was still able to capture the trip the way I wanted.

Skiing with a big camera bag just isn’t that fun when you’re actually trying to ski.

Shooting 8K-60 with 7Artisans 25mm, which is a 70mm equivalent.

I ran around Tokyo for an entire day with just this setup: ILS + a GoPro suction cup.

Being able to stick it to train windows and grab cinematic shots along the way was pretty fun. And when I’m traveling with friends all day, carrying a bigger camera kit just isn’t the move. We’re eating, running for trains, shopping, wandering around - shooting video is pretty much an afterthought.

With this I still came home with a ton of great b-roll.

Shooting 4K-240 with Laowa 7.5mm using a magic arm for some commercial work with @tincupwhiskey

Mounting cameras to objects has always been a big part of action camera shooting, but focus has been one of the biggest limitations.

@gopro sort of solved that with the Macro Lens Mod on HERO13, but this takes it much further by giving you full control over aperture and focus for more intentional rigged shots.

Think cam-on-cam BTS, cameras mounted to cars, steering wheels, @redbull cans, product rigs, and all the weird little angles that are hard to get any other way.

I’ve been shooting with Mission 1 Pro ILS for the past 6 months, and the more I use it, the more it reminds me of what originally drew me to GoPro.

When I first discovered GoPro, the magic was that I didn’t have to choose between skiing and filming. I could just go ski and come back with videos of the experience.

ILS gives me a similar feeling.

The adventures, travels, and activities I like are all things where size/space/weight matters. The reality of carrying a full-size camera, lenses, batteries and everything else while skiing or mountain biking isn’t always practical, and the easy way is to just not bring the big stuff.

The first time I used ILS was in Japan. I ran around Tokyo with one lens (that costs less than $75) and experimented with it, not knowing what anything would really look like. The camera didn’t have stabilization or focus assist back then, so I figured it was almost a waste of time. I didn’t load up the cards until I got home and I was blown away by what I was able to shoot, and had a new appreciation for what this little camera could do. It immediately lit a creative spark for me, and I hope it does the same for some of you out there!

If you want to access mountain views most people will never see, trek across glacial paths, disconnect from the noise, and make memories with good friends, it’s hard to imagine a better place.
