Before taking my psychology research capstone class, I was worried it was going to be one of the hardest experiences of my college career.

On the first day of class, my professor (Dr. Davoli) made us all laugh and became so comfortable with us. He made the class easy and fun. PSY 385 has become one of my favorite classes, ever.

Prior to the presentation event starting, our professor gathered us all for a pep talk and said how proud he was of us. At the end, we put our hands together and said, “Frizz!” (A tribute to us teaching him about the Magic School Bus)

My psychology research experiment dealt with gender disparities in psychology. In psych classes, predominantly women take them. But, when rising through the ranks, it is mainly men who have higher level psychology positions. I wanted to examine this glass-escalator phenomenon in my study.

My study has ten participants: All women in psychology. The experimental group engaged in a dialogue with me about gender disparities in psych, while the control group talked with me about their least favorite professor (Fun fact: Two people said the same one. I had them too!)

I hypothesized that women who were reminded of gender disparities would be motivated to do their best to on the two psychological tests I gave them: The Remote Associates Test and Unusual Uses Test.

For the RAT, both groups scores similarly. However, there was a pattern in my control group that pointed towards significance; but, without more participants, there was no significant difference between groups. Same with the UUT: Both groups scored similarly.

This study shows that time and number of participants is crucial in an experiment, and talking about gender disparities is important.
