MAGDALENA SUAREZ FRIMKESS & MICHAEL FRIMKESS
Katzenjammer Kids Series Vase

In the hands of Magdalena Suarez Frimkess and Michael Frimkess, the ceramic vessel became a meeting place for ancient form and modern life.

Michael emerged from the pioneering circle around Peter Voulkos at Otis, alongside Ken Price and John Mason, a generation that helped establish clay as a vital medium of postwar American art. His vessels brought the proportions of historical pottery into dialogue with contemporary American culture.

Magdalena brought the eye of a painter and the independence of an artist whose imagination crossed continents. Born in Venezuela and trained in painting and sculpture, she developed a visual language in which cartoons, memory and autobiography carried equal weight. Her painted narratives gave their collaboration its unmistakable voice.

Here, characters from The Katzenjammer Kids, a comic strip introduced in 1897, animate the vase in unfolding bands of imagery. The fleeting world of the newspaper becomes a lasting narrative in clay, inviting us to read the object as we move around it.

In 2024, LACMA opened The Finest Disregard, Magdalena’s first dedicated museum exhibition, when she was 95. That recognition invites a fuller understanding of the women whose artistic contributions shaped the history of California ceramics and modern art.

Their work is held by LACMA, while the Hammer Museum’s collection includes two related collaborative works titled Katzenjammer Kids, dated 1995 and 2000.

For collectors, this vase brings together the defining interests of their partnership: historical form, popular imagery and the expressive possibilities of clay. Its humor opens the door to a deeper story about artistic freedom, cultural memory and the meeting of two distinct imaginations.

SOME CARS BECOME COLLECTIBLE. OTHERS BECOME CULTURE.
Abell Presents a 1964 Chevrolet Impala Convertible SS 409 — one of the most iconic American automobiles ever built, offered at auction in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 24 at 9:00 AM PDT.
The 409 became famous before many of today’s collector cars ever left the showroom.
The Beach Boys sang about it.
Generations of musicians put the Impala into their lyrics.
Hollywood put it on screen.
Lowrider culture made the 1964 Impala one of its defining canvases.
Collectors turned the best examples into blue-chip pieces of American automotive history.
Few cars have ever crossed so many worlds.
The Impala was never just about horsepower. It became part of the visual language of America — cruising boulevards, California nights, music, movies, custom culture, performance and design.
And the 1964 Impala stands at the center of that story.
Add the coveted Super Sport package, the legendary 409, and a convertible body, and you have something far greater than a classic Chevrolet.
You have one of the defining American cars of the 20th century.
A car that could look at home in an important collection, outside a Hollywood premiere, cruising Sunset Boulevard, or moving slowly through the streets of Los Angeles with the top down.
There may be faster cars.
There may be rarer cars.
But very few automobiles have achieved the cultural stature of the 1964 Chevrolet Impala.

There is a difference between buying something beautiful and finding the right piece.

For more than a century, the Abell Weekly Auction has been a marketplace built around that discovery.

Week after week, remarkable property arrives from estates, private collections and residences throughout Southern California—fine art, important design, antiques, jewelry, silver, decorative objects and the unexpected pieces that cannot simply be ordered from a showroom.

And then the marketplace begins.

Experienced designers searching for the piece that completes a room.

Seasoned collectors recognizing something others may have overlooked.

Dealers hunting for the next discovery.

New collectors learning that extraordinary things do not always have to live behind the doors of galleries or boutiques.

And people who simply know what they like, waiting for that moment when something on the screen makes them stop.

That is The Weekly.

It is not about chasing what everyone else already owns.

It is about discovering something with history, character, craftsmanship and individuality—and giving it another life.

One week it might be a California painting.

The next, an extraordinary piece of mid-century design.

A beautifully made piece of silver. A vintage jewel. An antique table. A sculptural object. Something eccentric. Something important. Something you never knew you were looking for until you found it.

For collectors and designers, that constant rotation is what makes the auction so compelling.

The estates change.

The opportunities change.

But every week there is another chance to discover the right piece.

For over 110 years, Abell has connected remarkable objects with the people who recognize them.

The tradition continues.

Nothing says Los Angeles quite like sitting in the front row between I Love Lucy and James Bond.

For 110 years, Abell’s weekly auction has opened the gates to California’s most distinguished homes—bringing their art, jewelry, design, and furnishings into view, and carrying the stories held in those objects forward.

Abell’s history is also written by the people who came here to buy: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, multiple James Bonds, the Carradine Family, Steve McQueen, members of the Rat Pack, other actors who played James Bond, Julie Christie, Buddy Hackett, Phil Everly, Leslie Caron, and many more. They were Abell buyers, choosing pieces to furnish their own homes.

Each brought a personal eye to the search: for the painting that would change a room, the jewel that felt entirely right, the object that made a home unmistakably theirs. That is the enduring allure of the auction—the pleasure of looking closely, and the thrill of finding something with a past and imagining the life it might have next.

For generations, Abell has been a Los Angeles institution: a living museum, an open house, and a friend to anyone drawn to beauty, history, and the unexpected. The doors open every week. The preview is free and open to all.

Come behind the gates. There is always something worth discovering.

BEYOND IMPRESSIONISM. BEYOND CALIFORNIA.

EDGAR PAYNE (1883–1947)

There are artists who document a place. And there are artists who redefine how we see it.

Edgar Payne belonged to the latter.

At the forefront of California Impressionism, Payne possessed a remarkable ability to transform the natural world into compositions of color, movement, and architectural precision. His paintings were not simply landscapes. They were explorations of light itself.

When Payne journeyed through Europe in the 1920s, the working harbors of France and Italy became an extraordinary extension of his artistic vision.

Consider this painting.

The sails are monumental. Ivory and burnt orange rise against an electric blue sky. Below, the harbor becomes something almost abstract — fractured reflections, bold passages of turquoise, and a symphony of color that feels remarkably contemporary.

A century later, the painting seems as alive as the moment it was created.

AN ARTIST WHO HELPED BUILD A MOVEMENT.

In 1918, Payne became the founding president of the Laguna Beach Art Association, the institution that would evolve into Laguna Art Museum. He later served as president of the California Art Club, helping shape the course of American representational painting.

His works are preserved in major institutional collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and Laguna Art Museum — securing his place in the history of American art.

Today, his legacy exists at the intersection of museum scholarship, collecting, and the enduring appeal of great painting.

This October, Abell presents an exceptional work by one of California's most influential painters.

A LEGACY IN ART | THE ESTATE OF MARVIN & JUDY ZEIDLER

Some people collect art. Others help shape the very world in which art is created.

Hidden in the hills of Brentwood lies an extraordinary collection that tells the story of two remarkable Los Angeles visionaries: Marvin and Judy Zeidler.

For more than seven decades, the Zeidlers shared a life defined by art, culture, friendship, and an extraordinary passion for creativity.

From their iconic Zeidler & Zeidler fashion stores to their influential roles in the founding of LACMA, MOCA, and the Skirball Cultural Center, the couple helped shape the cultural identity of Los Angeles.

Their commitment went far beyond collecting. In 1986, Marvin, alongside sculptor Leonard Skuro, helped establish the Santa Fe Art Colony in downtown Los Angeles, providing affordable living and working spaces for artists and helping nurture a generation of creative talent.

Within their Brentwood residence, they assembled an exceptional collection over decades, developing personal relationships with artists and acquiring works that reflected their adventurous eye. From Wallace Berman and De Wain Valentine to Larry Bell, Mary Corse, and other influential California artists, their collection captures the extraordinary spirit of the West Coast art movement.

This was never simply a collection of art. It was a lifetime of friendships, discoveries, and a profound belief in the importance of artists.

Abell is deeply honored to present this remarkable estate, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire works from a home whose owners helped define the artistic and cultural landscape of Los Angeles.
