ABÉS – Steel Longtail Bicycle
From first ideation sketch, design, engineering, brazing the frame to a small production Series.

POSTS STORIES REELS

My next Projekt will a 20" Mini fully Cargo.
Tbh this sketching Phase is the most exiting one, and in times of pressing one Button to have an AI generate you a sketch, its even more satisfying to further explore my very own style of sketching.

Anyways, for the bikes Geometry i took the omnium 20" conversion I build with Tony in Februar 2025, and shortened the front Part a bit. I never really need all that much of cargospace. This will be an ebike, Bosch CX. Just need to find a place for the Battery, any recommendations?

The hardest Part of this bike build will be the Belt tensioner and reguiding of the Belt around the rear traingle suspension. Not looking forward to that at All;) besides that, im All in for this build. MBF 2026 lets go! by @abes_cycles

At Mini Bike Fest I finally showed my Longtail Prototyp with its first paintjob. I went for a dark purple metallic and polished up the front– and rear rack so both of these parts have a high contrast and stand out. The Bike rides so well with the 2.6" tires and im really happy with the build. Next, I need to install a slider tensioner, to further optimize the Belt tension.

Thanks a lot Robert Krügel known as @hagbardcel for the sweet pics. by @abes_cycles

In February this Mini-Max was downsized to a 20" cargo bike after a car wrecked the rear frame. Wheels by the mighty @munrowheels – colorful canvas by @vonjott_juicy.bike.stuff photos by @joshm.de and @20inch_ultras

I want to build the same bike as a 20" fully one day, any thoughts? by @abes_cycles

I build this custom steel bikepacking rig blending a 29er MTB with longer chainstays for relaxed long-distance touring, featuring a rigid carbon fork right now but fully ready for a 130mm suspension fork.

The Frame I brazed for @high_velocity_research VelocityResearch framebuilding competition (the yellow stickers and my startnumber 12 give it away) using partially recycled tubing from @rotorbikes paired with two custom X-Pac RX30 Inside-Out in the colour plum frame bags by @gramm_tourpacking — including a right-side zipper and integrated tent-pole sleeve on the main bag. The Snackbags are from @witslingers

This bike turned out to be my favorite ride at the moment. Next will be a sweet powdercoat paintjob in white or cream. by @abes_cycles

Kick Off 2 - parts raffle

So excited to see the results in September. by @abes_cycles

Some say the rear rack is the heart of every Longtail. Building this rear rack was a stressful and humbling 4 days. I did not have any other Experience in building racks before and I learned a bunch.

A)
Bending the outline stay in four places is next to impossible in one plane without each bend rotating in a slightly different Direction. This requiered some cheating by splitting the Tube in two parts (maybe you spot the joint).

B)
The rings can be one continues tube instead of 5 Single ones with 10 miters in total.

C)
The Design is slightly influenced by the tools, in this case the tube Binders radii. Originally i planned the grip to have 2 small radii instead of one large one.

D)
Yes – its crooked 😇

Overall im pretty happy with the rear rack, it came out very Level on the bike even with sag of the suspension fork. The design has a visual mirror axle with some tubes lines continuing to the frame, therefor creating a clean aesthetic. Soon the rear rack will be re-mounted to the Longtail in a new color.

Guess which one?🔥 by @abes_cycles

I build this MTB for longer bike touring trips at the @high_velocity_research framebuilding contest. Spoiler: I didnt win ;) It is partly made from an old @rotorbikes frame and not finished yet. Thanks to Johannes from Rotor to let me join his Booth at Bespoked!

Further To-dos on the Bike are to braze front and rear stainless steel racks for drybags soon and give it a sweet paintjob. Thanks for the help Tony, Flo, Tine, Marm, Konstantin and Berit.

The Photos where shot by Paul from @slowspinsociety – Highly appreciated!

Longtail Prototyping process in 2024. At the time it was the 2nd bicycling frame i build and looking back at it it was a bit overwheliming. It took 3 weeks and i think it was one of the most exhausting days ever. A bit proud about the result. by @abes_cycles

Linkage rear suspension construction will be next.. should this be an E-Bike even? by @abes_cycles
