My friends birthday was with bhajans, blessings, music and a fabulous room full of our favorite friends.

@pavankhanna66 your milestone birthday afternoon of #BhajanJamming was a wonderfully Indian way of marking a milestone: music, spirituality, friendship & celebration! Loved it!

My own high point was meeting & catching up with old friend & singer extraordinaire @shankar.mahadevan one of India’s most celebrated voices and a dear friend.

All of us felt the Music bonding the room as one

& you’re lovely twin Poonam & a room full of great friends & good energy

Sixty can be quite a fun delicious production with delightful kiosks of favorite foods too!

Here’s to milestones, old friends, great music & birthdays that don’t conform nor behave like ordinary afternoons.

History has often been more comfortable recognising women’s power when it arrives loudly enough to be called rebellion. But courage has never had just one language.

For Bahu Begum, it meant standing by a fallen husband when power and allegiance had begun to shift around him. For Uda Devi, it meant entering the fight herself, taking her place among those resisting the British during the Siege of the Residency. Their choices could hardly have looked more different. What connects them is something history is often less attentive to, the right to act on one’s own conviction.

Because agency is not always a dramatic break from the world one inherits. Sometimes it lies in choosing what to defend, what to refuse, and which role one will no longer allow others to define.

At the 13th edition of Metaphor Lucknow Litfest, advocate and activist Abha Singh returns to the stories of Bahu Begum and Uda Devi to challenge a familiar way of reading women in history, only as victims awaiting liberation.

Instead, these stories ask us to see women as participants in their own histories, making choices, carrying consequences, and exercising power within circumstances they did not necessarily choose.

Perhaps the more interesting question, then, is not whether women possessed power. It is why history has been so selective about what it was willing to recognise as power.
