This week's theme within the month's overall Identity theme is "habitat".

Obviously, this isn't actually where I live, but it's one of a few locations nearby that I love to go to, that help me connect with nature and feel at peace. This is Fforest Fawr, which is just a 10 minute drive up the road from my actual house. This forest has seen my smiles and my tears (it's actually pretty therapeutic walking around empty woods having a good cry!), my awe at the glorious light and despair over quite how much mud one place can hold after three months of rain. The kids hunt out the sculptures, build dens, forage for wild garlic, complain that their feet hurt... I can wander, breathe, notice the little things and feel a little more connected to the world around me.

This particular morning, one day this last week, the light was truly magical. It was a gorgeous, mild, autumnal day, with barely another soul around. Probably for the best as I contorted myself into all kinds of ridiculous positions to capture the best starbursts through the trees.

So it's not my home, in the bricks-and-mortar sense, but it's a place where I feel at home. A place of nature, light, wonder and peace. A place that holds a little bit of me and reminds me of who I am.

🎊 Happy Birthday Me 🎊

This last orbit around the sun has been somewhat of a roller coaster ride. From incredibly magical highs (quite literally) at the top of a beautiful, snowy mountain in Norway, to sitting on a bathroom floor with an unconscious child in my lap. There have been plenty of amazing, joyful moments, as well as some challenging and heartbreaking ones in between, but I guess that’s how life goes.

Through it all, I’m incredibly grateful for the love, support and friendship of the wonderful people around me. Another year older, and looking forward to whatever the next orbit brings 🩵 by @abicoop28

I'm sure I'll get back to creating floral multiple exposures before too long, but recently I've been enjoying creating travel ones.

I already shared some images I took in one Edinburgh Cathedral, that looked best in black and white. These ones I decided to keep in colour. This is St Giles Cathedral, one of Scotland's most important churches, and right in the heart of the old town. It was founded in the 12th century, with the current building dating back to the 14th century. We loved looking around it; so many beautiful details to discover.

I love that by layering the images I can include more of these details and tell a more complete story of the place in one single image. No matter how wide an angle your lens is, you can't capture views in multiple directions at once!

It was warm and sunny enough last weekend for a few bees to be out and about! Not too many flowers left for them, but they were enjoying whatever this pink flower is 🐝

When I looked out the window first thing this morning, there was a beautiful sunrise brewing. What followed was a gorgeous sunny autumnal morning, and spent a lovely couple of hours wandering around in the forest, with my camera, but also just stopping to appreciate everything. Nature and morning sunshine are some of the best healers.

This reminded me that I still had unedited photos from the morning in Portugal that me and Zoe got up at some unearthly hour to get down to the beach before sunrise. As I waited for the sun to peak over the rocks in the background, I was playing around with different shutter speeds. It's really interesting how it changes the image.

These four are 2 seconds, 1.6 seconds, 0.25 seconds and 8 seconds, in that random order, because the 2 second one is my favourite! I like how the long exposure smooths out some of the movement in the water, but with 8 seconds the clouds started showing movement too and that just makes it look out of focus.

What do you think? Which do you like best?

Looking out the window at the dismal, dull, overcast world at the moment, it definitely seems like grey was the right choice for October's Chase the Rainbow colour.

I decided to embrace many shades of grey, some warmer, some cooler, with a multiple exposure of the cool staircases in the Blavatnik Building in the Tate Modern gallery in London.

Every color is magical. Each one speaks to us in different ways, conveys different emotions and tells a different story.

We are getting together to explore a color each month in our Chase the Rainbow Project. This month’s color is GREY 🩶

The theme for this month with 52 Clicks is more challenging than it initially sounds. The theme is “Identity”, and this first week it’s “Hands Tell Stories”.

I’m not a girly girl. I don’t have pretty hands. My nails are always trimmed short, mainly for practical reasons. Between lifting weights and getting out in the dirt photographing nature, there’s really no point in me doing anything fancy to them, and it would just annoy me. The other side is decorated with calluses from lifting the weight of a fully grown man, and usually has bits of ripped-off skin from swinging around on a bar.

So I had a think about how I could capture my hands in a way that both fitted my identity and my photographic voice. I decided to use dramatic, moody light to create strong contrast, using light and shadow to draw the eye to my hand and the little bee necklace my daughters gave me for my birthday a few weeks ago. I felt this brought together the strength and practicality of my hands, my kids, and my favourite photography subject 🐝

Today, October 10, is World Mental Health Day 💜

There are many things I could have posted for this; seascapes, coffee, sunsets, any nature really, but I went with my favourite; bees. When life gets too loud I love to spend time in a garden with my macro lens, chasing these little guys around. Lately life has even been too much for any time to do this, but it makes me more appreciative of the times I do get.

I also know very well that mental health isn't just for today, for tomorrow or any other day, it is for everyday. In fact you never know what day a wave of struggles might hit, and you cherish the good days when you feel stronger.

If things are loud and heavy for you right now, please be gentle with yourself. You don't have to have it all figured out, you don't have to be okay all the time, and you don't have to be alone. My messages are always open for anyone who wants to chat so please reach out.

If someone around you is struggling, check-in with them, or simply just being there.

A massive thank you to everyone who has been and is there for me, it means more than you realise.

🐝

I love how much blue there has been in my grid lately, not for any real reason, it just seems to have gone like that. But I thought I'd continue the theme with one from earlier in the year that I hadn't shared yet. This was taken down in Cornwall at Trebarwith Strand using a minute long exposure to get that ethereal effect in the water.

Other than if you're too cold, this is pretty much accurate, especially if it's salted caramel or coffee gelato! 😋

I loved this cute little gelato shop in Edinburgh and all the sweet (pun intended) details; a waffle cone textured wall and ice cream cone light fittings! 🍦

Shooting through the window caught the reflection of the blue sky, as well as an Edinburgh bus and some buildings. I added to this scene by blending a street image of the colourful row of houses along Victoria Street.

This month's challenge with Dawn 2 Dusk Photography was to capture a panoramic image, which is something I haven't tried before. I usually stick with the classic 6:4 ratio for horizontal images, so it was a good opportunity to experiment with something different.

The rocky shoreline in Portugal made a perfect subject for this letterbox format. All the detail is centred around the horizon, and extra height would have just been empty beach/water and sky, adding nothing to the story.

Have you ever tried a panoramic aspect ratio?

Victoria Street in Edinburgh is a colourful, curving, cobbled street known for its historic stone buildings and brightly painted shop. It's said to have inspired Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series. A few of the shops are even Harry Potter themed, filled with all kinds of magical Harry Potter related stuff.

I created this double exposure layering one of these themed shops with a wider view of the colourful shops. I wanted to keep the fun colours, but also include lots of details of the place, and show it's popularity with the queue of people waiting outside.

Swipe across to see the two individual images I used.
