Exactly ten years ago today, I lost my dad. The man who was supposed to be my rock, my shoulder to cry on, my protector.

I still remember how tightly he hugged me the last time I saw him, how he whispered “I can’t wait to see what you’ll draw next”. I remember having moments when I’d finish a new piece and my first thought was to send it to him, and the jarring realization that I couldn’t. I remember having dreams about him, where it felt like we had some extra time together. His loss was too abrupt. A sentence that was cut off in the middle.

It’s weird that I’ve done most of my growing-up without him. At every big moment of my life, there was a small part of me that wished he could’ve been there to see it happen. This past year, I’ve felt his absence more deeply than usual. Moments like seeing fathers take their daughters on special outings, watching father-daughter dances at weddings, or scrolling past Father’s Day posts, things that rarely got to me before, hit a little harder this time. I didn’t even realize we were nearing ten years without him.

Ashton and I spent the night at a small villa we had stayed at on my birthday twelve years ago, to read the letters he left us. It was the only letter he’d ever written us. It felt surreal, but there was a steady peace that surrounded us as we sat together on the beach. I know I’ll never stop missing him, but I’m so grateful for my Heavenly Father who sees and meets us in our grief and pain.

If you’re feeling hopeless, please know that there are people who see you and care for you, and there’s a God who loves you very very much. <3 by @abigail__hamilton

A little over a year ago, I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts, completely unsure of what the next few months would look like. The girl who walked across the stage carried insecurities, doubt, and fear, all masked with a false confidence that everything was going to turn out okay. I had no idea! All I knew was to smile and answer everyone’s question with: “It’s all in God’s hands!” I thought that the more I said it, the easier it would be to believe.

It was hard. I felt like I was just going through the motions. I knew what needed to be done, but I wasn’t sure if I had the skills to do it. I was rejected from every job I’d applied to, and to be honest, I hated what little work I had to show. There was no direction, no consistency, only a couple of pieces I was somewhat proud of.

When submitting my portfolio to SCAD, despite the reassurance of my professors and those close to me, my confidence was dragging on the floor. On top of that, when I told people that SCAD was the ONLY grad school I applied to, the look on their faces screamed the same thing: “good luck”. Deep down, I knew it was a God thing that I’d even applied in the first place. So even though it felt like everything was pushing against me (even though it was really just myself), I kept going.

The girl who walked across the stage a couple of days ago walked with confidence, assurance, and determination. You can see it in her face.

Now, I still have two classes left. But I have direction, I’ve created some of my best work, and I’m thrilled for the future. SCAD is truly one of the best things to ever happen to me, and I’m so thankful that the Lord has opened this door. Stay tuned, world, He’s got something special for me and I’m going to take it by storm :)

Moments from the later half of 2024 (in no specific order, with no specific theme :,)

I was going to write something long about how fast time has gone by, but I think I’ll save that for another time. This year has been full of milestones and chaos and sweet sweet memories. (Oh, and lots of beautiful sunsets:))

Here’s to a year of new beginnings, both exciting and daunting, and another year of learning to see and love myself the way God does☺️🕊️ by @abigail__hamilton

Farewell, UF

I can’t even think of the right words to say.

My memories here have been kind and cruel and wonderful, each one pointing to Jesus and how I can’t do anything without Him.

I’ve leaned on Him like I’ve never leaned on Him before.

And I persevered.

My time at UF has been one big answered prayer, full of tiny little answered prayers. God has proved faithful time and time again, and when I think on that I become a mess at just how vast His love for me is.

To be honest, I’ve struggled with writing this post. Do I make a long one, or do I just say “peace out” and leave it at that? I still don’t know, and at this point, I think I’m rambling! Oops!

So I’ll leave with this secondhand memory: during my baby dedication, our pastor at the time asked if there was anything my family wanted to speak over me. After a moment, my grandma spoke up with a verse from the Bible: Micah 6:8.

It was only after I was looking through my graduation photos with my mom and grandma that she realized that the very verse carved into the arch above me in the first few photos, was the very verse that she spoke over me almost 21 years ago. Wow God.

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

So I’m going to do just that. I don’t know what the next few years hold. But I know that I’m going to walk it with confidence in my God and His plan for me.
