How to be Strong not just Skinny!

WHY I STOPPED CHASING SKINNY:

When I was younger, I swam competitively and loved the sport because it was a fun activity that pushed me mentally and physically. As a kid I was a little chubbier than some of the other swimmers, but didn’t think much of it and pushed harder and harder to reach my swim goals.

As I got older, my mentality around physical activity changed. Instead of thinking of workouts as a way to push my physical and mental limits, it became a way to become skinnier. I compared myself to other girls and thought that being skinny was the ideal body type; I worked out to have a physique that I believed would give me self-worth.

After years of working out and understanding my relationship with health, I am now working out to challenge myself and be healthy. I love my body despite not being super skinny and I constantly challenge myself at the gym.

As a young girl I didn’t care that I was chubby, I was just happy to be swimming. Today, I think about my younger self and try to enjoy the process of working out at the gym and pushing my limits.

As a gym girl, I know I so often get caught in comparisons from what I see on social media. Being bloated one day or not feeling my best makes me feel like I’ve lost all progress in the gym or I’m not working hard enough.

BUT, everyone has an “off” day, everyone feels bloated some days, and everyone at some point or another feels like they aren’t pushing hard enough. The best thing you can do is give yourself love, and remember that you’re human. No one is perfect!!

Your reminder that social media is FAKE and the gym girls you see online are showing you the BEST of their bodies. Although I have muscle and a “flat stomach” when I’m standing perfectly, I also have a ton of cellulite and a stomach that can look “bloated.” So many things can affect how you look, and we will never look like our “perfect” selves 24/7. All bodies can be gym bodies 💕.

🚨READ THIS! How I stopped feeling skinny fat and started feeling TONED without starving myself:

1. Increased protein intake: TRUST ME on this! As soon as I centered my meals around a protein source, I stopped craving high cal, low satiety foods.

AND

1. I ate MORE (both before and after my lifts): This not only helped me to stick to a sustainable calorie deficit without caving and eating junk food on the weekends, but also fueled my lifts to start seeing muscle growth!

What I eat in a day as a gym girl on vacation to stay lean and build muscle! This is your sign that you can go out to eat and still reach your goals! When I go out to eat, I try to pick a high protein meal that’ll keep me full and help me to reach my macro targets! Also, I am a big eater, so if a meal is centered around carbs, I have trouble feeling satiated!

🚨READ THIS:

Quality over quantity is KEY to seeing gym gains!

This means pairing down your exercises on a lift day to around 5-6 exercises to truly push yourself during your lifts…

AND

Either increasing the weight or slowing down your reps for time over tension. This will help you to gain some massive muscles! Doing 10-12 reps for each exercise not helpful if you are not pushing yourself, and the 5-8 rep range can really be helpful when you want to increase the weight!

2 things I did to see gym progress:

These 2 things were SO IMPORTANT to change to start gaining muscle and remain lean.

1. I started eating ENOUGH food: When you significantly lower your calorie intake, your metabolism can adapt to reduced food intake and your body might hold onto fat. When I was eating 1200-1400 calories a day, I not only felt drained during my lifts, but would over consume foods on the weekend because I never felt full.

2. Tracking Protein Intake: This is SUPER helpful in the beginning of your gym journey, because I realized without tracking I was eating only 60g per day. Pre-planning my meals helped me to consistently hit 100g+ of protein and in turn gain more muscle. You don’t need to go overboard with protein, but it is an important part of changing your physique.
