The class of 1961 celebrated our 65th class reunion this year. So, we’re old but still kicking. And, cheering for Dear Old Abilene High!

My name is Peter Damien Loza and I live in NYC. I was known as Pete Loza back in high school and was the first male CHAMP in 1989. Please see attached screen captures of photos and an article that was in The Battery.

CHAMP was definitely one of my highlights from AHS! by @abilenehighcheer

We’re not done celebrating AHS Cheer history just yet! 🖤💛🤍

What started as a Homecoming week celebration has turned into something so special! I’ve continued receiving wonderful photos and stories, and there are simply too many traditions and memories worth honoring to stop now.

If you’ve emailed me photos and haven’t seen them posted yet—don’t worry, they’re coming! I’m working my way through every submission! 🦅

Now we’re honoring sisters Elaine Muñoz and Tania Muñoz-Tully!

Elaine cheered Varsity in 1985–1986, and Tania cheered JV in 1992–1993 before making Varsity her sophomore year and cheering through her senior year in 1996.

Thank you to their brother, AHS Class of ’85 alum Alvaro Muñoz, for sharing these special photos! 🖤💛🤍 by @abilenehighcheer

Yesterday, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Gerald Galbraith, who brought me a beautiful portrait of his late wife, Christie, along with a wonderfully written article about her life. 🖤

Christie cheered at Abilene High School in 1957 and 1958 and graduated from AHS in 1958. Even more special, her mother was the leader of the AHS pep squad when she attended in 1931! Both Christie’s cheer uniform and her mother’s pep squad uniform have been preserved and are pictured here.

Getting to hear about Christie and see these pieces of AHS history in person was incredibly special.

What beautiful traditions we’ve been able to celebrate this week—from generations of Eagles who came before us to the traditions we’re continuing today. I hope y’all have enjoyed looking back as much as I have. 🖤💛🤍🦅

This week on the AHS Cheer page, I’ve been sharing old cheer pictures for Homecoming and asking alumni to send me anything they have from their time at Abilene High. I knew it would be fun, but I genuinely had no idea how special it would end up being for me personally.

All week, people have sent me pictures from decades of AHS Cheer—some from people I knew cheered, some from people I know personally and had NO idea cheered, some whose daughters I cheered with, and some whose daughters I get to coach now. I’ve gotten to hear stories, see old uniforms, and learn about traditions I didn’t even know existed.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, it really hit me how incredibly lucky I am.

Six years ago, I was asked to be the JV cheer coach at my alma mater, and from the very beginning I have treated that opportunity like the absolute honor it is. Now I get to lead the program I once cheered for myself, and I still don’t take a single bit of it for granted.

My days are a little unconventional... I start my mornings at Abilene High with my big littles, spend the rest of the school day at Ward teaching Deaf Education to my littlest littles, and then so many evenings I’m right back with my big littles again.

Seriously—how many school districts would let someone teach elementary Deaf Education AND coach high school cheer at her alma mater?! Somehow, AISD has given me the opportunity to do two things I absolutely love, with two completely different groups of kids I absolutely adore.

I love my job. I love the people I work with and the people I work for. I love that I get to be a teacher AND a coach without having to choose between two parts of myself that mean so much to me.

This week especially, I’ve loved being reminded that I’m just one tiny piece of a much bigger story. Looking through decades of AHS Cheer pictures, then seeing my own from when I wore that uniform alongside pictures from tonight where I’m standing on the same sidelines as their coach, is a full-circle moment I don’t really have words for.

I’m thankful. I’m grateful. I’m blessed. And I mean every single one of those words with my whole heart.

It’s a great day to be an Eagle🤍 by @abilenehighcheer
