Abirami Logendran appointed artistic director of Fotogalleriet.

Abirami Logendran is a curator, artist, writer and editor, and has curated numerous exhibitions and programmes both in Norway and internationally. She holds master’s degrees in fine art and in screen cultures, and has held positions as film curator at Kunstnernes Hus Cinema and editor-in-chief of Norwegian Art Yearbook. Logendran combines an exceptional breadth of expertise with a deep knowledge of and interest in photography and camera-based media. The board is confident that Logendran will further develop Fotogalleriet as a leading venue for photography and camera-based art, in in line with the mandate of the institution.

With a strong interest in photography as a form of artistic expression, and in how images are produced and circulate, I see this as a unique opportunity and a great honour. I want Fotogalleriet to be a gathering point for everyone engaged with photography in the expanded sense – a place that presents solo and group exhibitions of the highest quality, and that creates the conditions for innovative, substantive conversations about images.”

Today is my last day as a film curator @kunstnerneshuskino.

During the past years I’ve had the honour of programming works by so many amazing artists, and some of them travelled to Oslo to visit our cinema. I’ll miss receiving the audience at the door before a screening, all the sound and light coordination with my technician colleagues, all the post-screening talks with filmmakers, both the formal and informal ones.

went to Paris to see Clair-obscur @boursedecommerce, a show about light and shadows - the invisible and the visible: it resonated with me after working on Dark Adaptation (show i curated, currently on view at Kistefos)

This week, e-flux Film Notes publishes “Metabolic Grammars,” Abirami Logendran’s essay on how films and installations by diasporic artists give form to identities and traditions that are remade through displacement.

Abirami Logendran @abilogix is a writer and curator based in Oslo. She has curated exhibitions at Kistefos Museum, ISCP (NYC), and Pachinko (Oslo), and film- and discursive programs at the ICA (London), the Vera List Center (NYC), e-flux Screening Room (NYC) and Kunstnernes Hus (Oslo). Her writing on film and art has appeared in Kunstkritikk, Frieze, Flash Art and more. Metabolic Grammars is her ongoing research project, supported by FORART.

Dark Adaptation opened at Kistefos Museum before summer and is on view until end of next month. Works by Jack Whitten, Glenn Ligon, Solveig Lønseth, Doris Guo, Lorna Simpson and Wolfgang Tillmans, curated by me.

The title refers to what happens to your sight when you move from daylight into a dark room. There’s a period where you can’t see anything, before your eyes slowly adjust. That’s the viewing mode I was aiming for: a slow adjustment, a kind of acceptance of the fact that not everything will be immediately visible and translatable.

Glissant’s right to opacity is the backbone for this show: one can and should be allowed to be opaque, to not be completely understood, and to simply exist as different. For this show, opacity vs transparency is not just the conceptual starting point but also the formal one - the tension is in the room as well as the work.

“Bouchra is a work of cinema. The environments are collaged from 3D scans of real Casablanca and New York streets, while the characters are hand-animated in Blender. The result is hyper-expressive, closer to a video game than a cartoon, with a warm, grainy look roughened by glitches in the fur and the faces.”

Abirami Logendran (@abilogix) reviews Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki’s debut feature Bouchra, a film that leverages lush animation to comment on identity, family, sexuality, and creativity.
