A perfect LA summer day with family & friends.☀️

We finally rode the Marina del Rey WaterBus that Dominic has been wanting to try forever, cruised over to Mother’s Beach for lunch, then spent the evening with friends and family waiting for D Smoke and Carl Thomas to take the stage.

Watching @dsmoke7 perform was especially meaningful. The Roux family has known The Farris Famiy since they were littles in church. I first met him when he won Rhythm + Flow, one of my favorite shows I’ve ever had the privilege of producing. Seeing how much he’s grown as an artist, sharing the stage with his wife, brothers, nieces, and nephews, felt less like a concert and more like a family celebration.

The concert was free, the crowd was massive, and somehow we ended up front row. The boys got to shake his hand, give hugs, and experience a night I’m pretty sure they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Grateful for family, friends, this city, and those rare days when everything comes together to create a core memory. ✨

Reading Raising Conscious Sons while following the sexual assault allegations at Cornell hits differently as a mom of two boys. I’m also reading Raising Conscious Daughters, because understanding what girls face matters when raising boys.

One chapter has me reflecting on how my sons need different things than I did at their age. My experience growing up as a girl can inform my parenting, but I also have to listen, understand their experiences, and learn what they need from me.

I want my sons to understand that consent is essential, someone else’s vulnerability is never an opportunity, and friendship means having the courage to challenge harmful behavior, even when it’s your friends.

Raising boys who succeed matters. Raising boys who treat people with dignity matters just as much. That work starts at home, with the conversations we have and the behavior we model.

If you’re raising children, consider reading these books with me. We have a responsibility to think deeply about the people we’re helping them become.

And just like that… summer is over.

After a wonderful summer full of adventures, late nights, swimming, traveling and making some pretty great memories, these two are back at it!

Roman is officially a 3rd grader and Xavier is starting 6th grade. How did we get here so fast?!

Not sure how I have a middle schooler when I’m clearly still 29, but here we are. 😏

Here’s to a great year, good teachers, good friends, lots of growth… and me remembering how to pack lunches again.
