So many women come into Abode, find something they absolutely love, but hesitate to buy it because they feel guilty spending money on themselves. And honestly, sometimes I just say, “There’s no point being the richest bitch in the cemetery.” But sometimes the conversation goes a little deeper.

Women spend so much of their lives doing things for everyone else their kids, partners, families, homes. You’re allowed to spend some of the money you work hard for on YOU too. Obviously I’m not saying blow your savings or don’t pay your mortgage. But life is short and money is also there to help you enjoy it. Buy the fucking dress. Go out for lunch. Buy the earrings. Buy the art that makes you happy every time you look at it.
And my favourite logic the more you wear something, use it or look at it, the cheaper it is.

As we head into our busy season, it was time to get together and catch up, especially because we don’t often get the chance to actually work together. We had a great night eating, singing and dancing at @midnightshanghai (our go to).

One of the things I’m most grateful for after all these years in business is the incredible women who have stood behind the counter at Abode. When you own a small business, you’re handing over something that is such a huge part of you. You need people you can trust, people who understand what you’ve created, who care about your customers and who represent your business when you’re not there. Finding the right people can be hard. Somehow, I’ve always been incredibly lucky!

These women are kind, funny, hardworking, beautiful humans and I genuinely trust them with something that means so much to me. And while I’m feeling grateful, I also want to say thank you to every single person who chooses to shop with us. When you support a small business like Abode, it doesn’t just impact my life. It impacts the lives of these women too. It gives us jobs, hours, opportunities and a little place we genuinely love coming to work. Every purchase, every order, every recommendation to a friend and every time you walk through our doors helps keep this little business going and we never take that for granted.

Abode might be my business, but it has never just been about me. It’s our little team, our customers and this beautiful community that has kept us here all these years.

So thank you, from all of us xx taken in Riverside Market - Christchurch by @abode_chch

Painted by John William Waterhouse in 1908, The Soul of the Rose was inspired by a line from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem Maud: “And the soul of the rose went into my blood.”

Waterhouse takes that single line and turns it into this incredibly intimate moment. The woman closes her eyes as she breathes deeply into the rose, as though its scent has completely transported her. A lot of people focus on her face amongst the roses, but I often find myself looking at her hand resting against the wall. It’s a small detail, but there’s something about the way her fingertips touch the weathered brick that makes the whole scene feel real. You can almost imagine the rough texture beneath her hand as she leans forward to breathe in the rose. It feels like we’ve caught her in a completely private moment. And the colours in this painting are just beautiful. Her incredible blue patterned dress against her copper hair, the soft pink roses and all those deep, muted greens. Nothing is overly bright, yet the painting feels incredibly rich.

The rose is traditionally a symbol of love, but here there’s a feeling of longing and memory too. Her eyes are closed, completely lost in the scent, perhaps she is remembering someone, somewhere, or a moment that has passed. That’s one of the things I love most about Waterhouse. You can look at his paintings again and again and continue to notice something new.

The Soul of the Rose reprinted right here in Christchurch, available in two sizes, and framed in this beautiful antique style frame.

Moonstone gets its name from its dreamy, blue white glow that moves across the stone as it catches the light, almost like moonlight dancing on water. Associated with intuition, new beginnings and inner strength, every Moonstone is beautifully unique.

If you’re obsessed with the moon, chances are you’ll be obsessed with Moonstone too. Pop in store to check out our selection of moonstone rings! taken in Riverside Market - Christchurch by @abode_chch

A little lace appreciation + a little shop update.

We have some absolutely beautiful lace pieces in store at the moment and just a heads up, you won’t find these ones on our website.

Lately I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed by all the different roles that come with owning a business. There’s always something else you could be doing and I’m trying to take a bit of that pressure off myself and remember that I don’t actually have to do everything, all the time. Uploading all of our clothing to the website is really time consuming and the reality is I sell probably 95% of our clothing in store anyway. There’s also the business reality of offering free shipping over $150, then if something doesn’t fit quite right and or you don’t Iove it, it comes back, we’ve already covered that shipping cost. So this summer I’m trying something a little different.

I’m not going to put every piece of clothing online. Some things will simply be available in store, where you can come in, try them on, have a chat with me and actually see how they feel on, which is one of the best parts of this job!

Our mugs, mirrors and gratitude journals will absolutely still be online, because those are the things you guys are loving and buying online the most. I’ll also be adding some new journals over summer, along with a little more homeware + giftware.

And of course, if you’re not in Christchurch and you see an outfit on Instagram that you LOVE, please just DM me! I’m more than happy to help with sizing, send measurements and post it out to you.
Just keeping you in the loop while I figure out ways to make running a business feel a little simpler and a lot more enjoyable. Thanks Sharne xx taken in Riverside Market - Christchurch by @abode_chch

I honestly feel like I’ve won the lotto, I’m so happy right now!

I can’t quite explain how exciting it is to have my favourite piece of art hanging in the shop and soon to be in my home

I love watching @myartbroker ask people, “If you could own one piece of art, what would it be?” I could watch people’s answers all day. Just like beauty, music or food, art is completely subjective. What one person walks straight past can be the piece another person can’t stop thinking about.

For me, it’s The Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse. I love everything about her. Her beautiful red hair, the white dress, the tapestry spilling over the side of the boat, the deep colours and all those tiny symbolic details. To me, she looks like she’s quietly singing to herself as she floats down the river.
It’s tragic and romantic and dark, but ridiculously beautiful. There’s sadness in it but she also seems strangely peaceful. I think that contrast is what I’m so drawn to. Something can be heartbreaking and beautiful at exactly the same time.

There’s something about art that can make you feel something before you even know the story behind it and this one has always done that for me.

Beautifully reprinted right here in Ōtautahi and framed in the dreamiest gold frame. I’m completely obsessed. She’s even more beautiful in real life.

I would love to know if you could own one piece of art, what would it be? Comment below! Xx taken in Riverside Market - Christchurch by @abode_chch
