Hello! I’m new here. A bookish social worker 📚

I have for some time, wanted to create an account that shared what I am currently reading, my recommendations, and a way to connect to other book lovers.

I also wanted to use this account as a way to break up the noice of the world. To have a creative outlet to make sense of it all! I’ve been distancing myself from social media but instead wanted to create something that feels intentional and using this account as a tool, rather than a way to dissociate.

So, follow along for a year of 50 (or more!) books. Wish me luck 😮‍💨

⭐️⭐️

A healer, a stormwielder, opposing kingdoms, war, betrayal, and overuse of the word “tides.” This follows Princess Mayah a healer of Tundrayn and Zevayr, the stormwielding Dark Commander of Arbinj. It is a slow burn romance? (Toxic one) With twists that leave you whiplashed. This book felt like I was watching reality television or eating an overly sugary drink that leaves you with a headache. It was entertaining at the same time it made my eyes roll into the back of my head. If you can set aside morals, toxic relationships, and some poor writing then read it. I enjoyed it enough to finish it but glad it’s a standalone book.

⭐️⭐️ ⭐️

A coming of age story that follows a girl named Abby who grew up in the upper peninsula of Michigan. The shining part of this book was the description of the landscape and animals. It really felt like a love letter to the land. Everything else however, was pretty lackluster. None of the characters really captivated me and it got quite dull at times to get through. It also leads with this event that takes place in her childhood that makes you think that there is more there and ultimately leads to nothing substantial to the story. A slow read but I did enjoy the descriptions of a place I’m quite familiar with.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ and half!

I don’t normally go for romance but it was such a sweet and cute read. I really grew to love Olive and Adam! I just watched the movie that was adapted based off the book and it was good but I enjoyed the book more. Any other Ali Hazelwood books I should read?

Okay, so I’ve got a lot I like about this book, and some things I don’t. It is written so well, and I can see why it has captivated so many readers. The theme of this story (post apocalyptic/alien invasion) is usually something I’d go for, but I simply think it just isn’t for me. Princess donut is the shining star (and she knows it.) Although the humor cuts through the obscenely gory and the heaviness of an alien species slaughtering humankind in a game show — it did get old for me at times (I love dark humor but in this context it didn’t work for me.) I listened to this on audible and the actor who does the voices did a 10/10 job…but it still didn’t always captivate me. I think I’m done with this series (might revisit in the future.) I get the lore, just wasn’t for me.

This weekend we took our new camper out for our first camping adventure as a farewell to summer before the school year starts. It was the perfect reset. We went into a small town called Grayling and stopping by this book store called Hidden Nook Booksellers. The main table to checkout was built with real books stacked on top of each other by the owner and his wife. Such a cool feature I’ve never seen before! Make sure to check them out if you’re ever in the area. by @abookishsocialworker

It’s been a minute! I haven’t had the time to read as much since a lot of that time has gone to getting prepared for the fall but I finally got to finish this masterpiece! It is so beautifully written & if you loved Circe in The Odyssey film you’re in for a treat!

An absolute heart wrenching memoir of journeying from El Salvador to the United States at age 9 to be reunited with his family in the United States. First of all, thank you to @the_read_maple for the recommendation! I listened to this one on audible, which I don’t often do, and it was so captivating. I think this book connects people to human experiences that we can’t quite fathom and it’s important these stories are read. Just a beautifully written account of Javier’s life that will sit with me forever.

Hoffman is such an exceptional storyteller. It’s so rich and beautiful you feel as if you’re being told a story orally over a crackling fire. I cannot say enough about this book! It’s a mix of history and magic, social commentary, and romance that are so intertwined in a beautiful way. Maria Owens will be a character I won’t forget. I can’t wait to devour the rest of Hoffman”s writing!

I want to share more books I’m reading with my oldest daughter! She is starting to read so we have been reading lots of chapter books.

We first saw the movie which is equally as beautiful as the book. It was so fun reading this and being familiar with the characters but being able to spot the differences between the film and book. The book is beautiful and such an effortless read! One of my favorite stories I’ve read with my daughter.

⭐️⭐️⭐️and half. Daaaamn, WHAT A RIDE. This took me awhile to get through with the deep dives into one person, and then the history of a town ,and then the background of another person, but it was written so well it was easy to get sucked back in. A true story of Zac Brettler who was caught on surveillance footage jumping from a high balcony of Riverwalk and into the River Thames. It reads like a movie script that you can’t fathom can be true but it is. It was exhausting just reading about men that get away with poor behavior over and over again but altogether a solid read. I need a good pallet cleanser. Any good recs?
