Alumni Spotlight — Saul Terry

Saul Terry is a Stl’atl’imx artist, educator, Chief & activist from Xwisten near Lillooet. He was the first Indigenous graduate of the Vancouver School of Art, now Emily Carr University, graduating with honours in sculpture in 1968.

His sculptures draw from Stl’atl’imx iconography & Lillooet stone artifacts, using animals & symbolic figures to explore survival, resistance & justice. His work carries many of the same ideas that have shaped his political life, bringing questions of land, culture & Indigenous rights into the studio.

One of his best-known works is a rock painting created at the confluence of the Bridge and Fraser Rivers in 1978. Created as a protest against proposed restrictions on Indigenous fishing rights, the painting remains on the rock today.

Beyond his studio practice, Terry has spent decades advocating for his community. He served as Chief of Xwisten for 16 years and became President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, serving from 1983 to 1998.

His work continues through the art, advocacy and community he has helped strengthen.

A look back at our first Squamish Youth Art Camp, held in partnership with the Aboriginal Gathering Place & Emily Carr University.

Throughout the week, youth explored different creative practices with a range of workshop instructors. Whess Harman led a collage workshop, where students created their own characters with illustrations by cutting & combining different styles. Plus, students created 10" drums with instructors Sydney Pascal & Kajola Morewood. taken in Emily Carr University of Art + Design by @aboriginalgatheringplace

🎓 AGP Alumni Spotlight: Shoshannah Greene

Meet Haida artist Shoshannah Greene. Born and raised in Haida Gwaii, Shoshannah is a member of the St’awaas XaaydaGaay from Hlkinil llnagaay (Cumshewa Village). She graduated from ECU in 2015 with a Bachelor of Media Arts, majoring in Animation.

Shoshannah originally came to ECU wanting to pursue animation, but along the way her practice shifted toward Haida formline, storytelling & illustration. Today, she combines traditional and digital approaches to explore Haida stories and what it means to carry those connections into contemporary life.

One of her larger public works is Raven N’ the City, a commission for Vancouver City Centre Station. Inspired by the experience of travelling from Haida Gwaii to Vancouver, the piece brings Raven into the city and reflects on Vancouver as a place where many Indigenous communities have built connections.

Shoshannah has also been a two-time YVR Art Foundation Emerging Artist Scholarship recipient and has received Bill McLennan Masterpiece Study Program grants to research collections at museums in Chicago & New York.
