🏺 La Parisienne, Greece 🇬🇷

La Parisienne is a fragment of a Minoan fresco discovered at the Palace of Knossos on Crete. It shows a young woman with large eyes, red lips, an upturned nose and curly hair falling over her forehead. She wears an elaborate priestly garment with a sacred knot on the back. The figure was originally part of a larger scene known as the Camp-Stool Fresco, which included seated and standing men and women. La Parisienne was shown sitting on a folding stool and receiving a sacred kylix. The fresco was discovered in 1903 in the western wing of the palace and was given its name by archaeologist Arthur Evans, who thought the woman's appearance resembled the fashionable Parisian women of his time. Dating to around 1450 BC, the surviving fragment is now housed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum on Crete.

Minoan Larnax with a Hunting Scene
14th-13th century BC
📍Archaeological Museum of Rethymno, Crete

This painted clay larnax was used as a funerary chest and comes from the Late Minoan cemetery of Armenoi, near Rethymno.

Its main panel shows a lively hunting scene with bulls, wild goats and human figures. The animals and hunters are highly stylised, almost abstract. Geometric patterns and flowing lines decorate the lid and the borders.

Even in death, the Minoans surrounded their loved ones with scenes from the world of the living. 🏺🤠

🇬🇷 TOMORROW WE CELEBRATE THE POWER OF "NO": OHI DAY IS COMING! 🇬🇷✊
Tomorrow, October 28th, Greeks all over the world will stand together in unity and pride to mark one of the most significant moments in modern history: Ohi Day (Oxi Day).
🛑 The ultimate stand for freedom
In the early morning hours of October 28, 1940, an ultimatum was delivered to Greece demanding complete surrender to Axis forces. The response from the Greek soul was instant, fearless, and absolute: "OHI!" (NO!) ❌

Temple of Aphrodite and Ares
Lenika, Crete

Hidden behind the olive groves near Agios Nikolaos, this little-known sanctuary is worth the hike. After parking the car, you’ll need to walk a bit to find it.

Dating back to the 2nd century BC, the temple was built by the ancient city of Lato on the site of an older sanctuary dating to around the 10th century BC. It had two separate chambers, one dedicated to Aphrodite, goddess of love, and the other to Ares, god of war.

Its location was no coincidence. Lato and neighbouring Olous fought a long dispute over ownership of this sacred land. The conflict was eventually settled through arbitration, and the sanctuary was awarded to Lato.

Many of the inscriptions and finds discovered here are now preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos.

Not your typical archaeological stop, but that’s exactly what makes places like this special. 🌿🏺🤠

“Every inch of Herakleion is paintable.”
— Henry Miller, The Colossus of Maroussi

When American writer Henry Miller visited Heraklion in 1939, he discovered a city full of contrasts, colours, history and character.

More than 85 years later, his words still feel relevant.

From the narrow streets of the old town to the Venetian walls, the bustling squares and the picturesque harbour, every corner of Heraklion has a story to tell.

And perhaps that’s what makes our city so special. You don’t have to look far to find beauty. Sometimes, all you need to do is look around. ❤️

What is your favourite corner of Heraklion? by @aboutheraklion

The Aqueduct of Spilia, five minutes south of Heraklion city, is the largest water bridge built in Crete. This construction was prompted when the Egyptians (around 1830-1840) discovered the ancient Roman aqueduct of Knossos, with an underground tunnel of 1,150 metres long, which was cleaned, opened and restored.
