Dreams, big or small, are always attainable with hard work and dedication. Sacramento native and celebrity hair stylist Nakia Collins knows what it’s like to have your dreams come true. @nakiarachon studied at Paul Mitchell and most recently has done hair for the highly acclaimed 2020 American musical film Black is King.
💇‍♂️
@nakiarachon shared her experience with @aboutsacramento in a short interview.
- [ ]
AS: What was your most memorable moment working on Black is King?
- [ ]
NC: One of my most memorable moments working on Black is King was working on Bigger and Brown Skin girl the emotions that overcame me were so intense. It made me realize that this was bigger than me being a hairstylist working on this film and making an impact... allowing a space for people like me to see themselves in parts of the film. The whole album is a beautiful memory for me. Most of all connecting deeper with the whole team was the highlight.
- [ ]
AS: Have you ever been star struck?
- [ ]
NC: I first was star struck back when I worked in a hair salon in West Hollywood and I walked to the front desk and seen Tyra Banks. I grew up one of the biggest ANTM fans end even made it to the second audition back in the day! Lol
- [ ]
AS: What advice would you give to a young lady wanting to be a famous Hair Artist like yourself?
- [ ]
NC: My advice for young women wanting to be a successful hair artist is to not get caught up in the labels or comparing themselves to another persons journey. Most of all believe in yourself and that you can do what you dream to do. Know that it’s never a competition and set small goals towards your big goal!
- [ ]
@nakiarachon is a testament to believing in yourself and working towards your dream.

@ishmaeldpruitt and @easley.vs.armoni met and worked together during their time at @sacchildrenshome. The two connected through their shared values from personal and professional experiences. Both had a passion for empowering underserved communities. This passion led them to create @projectoptimismsac, a 5013c located in the Sacramento and LA counties.
@projectoptimisimsac works to create development program and services with the help of the community to meet the needs of that community. Project Optimism is broken down into 3 main initiatives:

- Community Development: Coordinating volunteers at large scale community events while also hosting events of their own. These events range from personal development to toy drives.
- Positive Image Events for a Cause: Events that unite the community and raise funds for schools, nonprofits, college and scholarships, and more!
- Youth Mentorship Program: Crafted for those in grades 4th-12th, students can enroll in character building workshops, outings, and days of service.
To get involved, donate, or to learn more add their page and visit their website.

👑 The @sacramentokings come together with incarcerated individuals at Folsom State Prison to bring awareness to justice reform.
_
The game in December was the first of its kind in the @werepjustice campaign. The campaign is in partnership with One Community, @antirecidivismcoalition and the Kings. The @sacramentokings are the first participants in the #PlayForJustice initiative.
_
The series of basketball games played at correctional facilities is between incarcerated individuals and NBA players and coaches. Players and Coaches sat down for a facilitated conversation with those in Folsom State Prison and members of the @werepjustice campaign. After the conversation and hour-long basketball game takes place.
_
The goal is to uplift the narratives of hope and redemption to break down stigmas associated with those impacted by the justice system.
_
An amazing opportunity to have our own in on the conversation.

The Shake Shack burger chain is shaking up its first location at midtown’s Ice Blocks. 🍔🥤
The Shake Shack menu will consist of burgers (yes they have vegetarian options), shakes, fries, and “concretes”. •
Concretes are blended with mix-ins that vary at each location to create flavor combos specific to the locale. Shake Shack has announced plans to partner with a local charity to donate 5% of sales from one of its concrete variations at the Ice Blocks location.
•
Set to open up in early 2020 the wildly popular NYC-based cult favorite will include a large outdoor patio and will feature table tops made from reclaimed bowling alley lanes. •
With the Ice Blocks set as the fourth Northern California location there is sure to be long lines at its opening. •
Forget about the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich vs Chick-fil-A frenzy.. prepare yourself for the Shake Shake vs In-N-Out debate right here in #Sacramento.
