In December 2025, G.A.S., in partnership with @yinkashonibarefoundation, announced the fourth edition of the G.A.S. Fellowship Award. This year’s edition offered multiple fully funded residencies, including two slots at the G.A.S. "Comme les étoiles du ciel"Solo showOn seen at @citedesartsparis11/03 - 15/04The title of the installation comes from the Genesis: "And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven" (26:4-5). This phrase came to the artist as he watched his grandfather's funeral in Nigeria from Brazil. Despite the distance - both geographical and existential - that now separates them, the vital force of one now lives on in the other, and in all of his descendants now scattered across the globe. The link between Nigeria and Brazil, where Yorùbá culture has been preserved and transformed, echoes the diasporic trajectories that led to this transatlantic scattering.Comme les étoiles du ciel offers a reflection on àṣẹ through the prism of parentage, childhood trauma and protection. Àṣẹ, which can be translated as ‘the force that enables things to happen’, is an energy that infuses matter: both the breath of life and the ability to act on the world.This continuity of the flow of àṣẹ, passed down from generation to generation, is not only a source of wonder: it is also painful. The generational traumas inherent in filiation (grandfather, father, son) and paternal violence resonate with gestures of care and protection that are also passed down from father to son. It's never too late for a 2025 photo dump !This year was filled with blessings, I met wonderful people and made new friends across the world !I am greaful for everyone of you !You see my wins but this year I also searched 94 applications, applied to 27 and only got 3. They ended up leading me to :- The 2025 Shed Prize for contemporary art of Pantin @sheds_pantin - The Oficina Solar 2025 residency at @solardosabacaxis in Rio de Janeiro for 3 month with the support of @la_fab_officiel - 2-12 residency in @citedesartsparisI changed studio 4 times but I also had shows in Cotonou ( thank you @ileife.artsociety ), Rio, Brusells ( thank you @andyrank.in ), Montreuil ( thank you @milieu__studio ) and Pantin.With @17carbone , we achieved great things with our Bright Future Academy workshops.Stay tuned, more is coming !Keep pushing ! This operation, presented as an action to combat drug trafficking, highlights the systemic and racist violence suffered by Afro-descendants and marginalized people in Brazil.“What happened in Rio was not a security operation, it was a massacre. More than 100 people, almost all of them black and living in poverty, were murdered in an action planned and carried out by the state itself” said Ana Piquer, Americas Director at Amnesty International.Brazil was the last country in the Americas to abolish slavery in 1888. Of the estimated 12 million Africans deported during the transatlantic slave trade, approximately 5.5 million were taken to Brazil. That represents 4 out of 10 people.Built in 1811, the Valongo Wharf was the place where between 500,000 and one million enslaved people were brought ashore until the official end of the transatlantic slave trade in 1831. During its twenty years of operation, the Valongo Wharf was the gateway for thousands of human lives to Brazil, but also to the entire Americas, as it served as the starting point for the intra-continental slave trade.Kongo cosmograms are drawings made on the ground that represent the passage from the world of the living to that of the dead in a cycle that follows the course of the sun. These drawings can also be sung. They took root in the Americas, wherever people of African descent were deported. The location was chosen because the remains of numerous candles attest to regular offerings made at this crossroads to the orisha of life paths, the intercessor between the physical and the invisible world.The cement statues, which are permanently installed in the city, now receive black and red candles, cachaça, and palm oil (dendê) from Macumba devotees (a term encompassing several Afro-Brazilian spiritualities such as Candomblé and Umbanda) who wish to attract his favor and open their own paths.Laroiê Exú!Exú é Mojubá! by @aboynamedjane
