Agency Spotlight: Assateague State Park Beach Patrol, MD

Founded in 1966, Assateague State Park is Maryland’s only oceanfront state park and welcomes 1.8 million visitors each year. The Assateague State Beach Patrol, certified by the USLA since 2017, protects this dynamic barrier island environment and plays a central role in keeping the shoreline safe and accessible.

The Beach Patrol’s training program emphasizes strong physical conditioning, prevention practices, and medical readiness. Lifeguards provide rapid response to emergencies along the two-mile beach and throughout the campground, where changing tides, shifting sandbars, and variable surf conditions can create unique challenges for swimmers and beachgoers. Guards also coordinate with Park Rangers when the island’s wild horses wander into busy beach areas, helping guide them away so visitors can enjoy the shoreline safely.

The agency also fosters future responders through its Junior Beach Patrol program, which introduces young participants to ocean safety, teamwork, and the fundamentals of lifesaving.
