author@classicalmusicreel Before The Phantom of the Opera became a global theatrical phenomenon, it existed as a quiet obsession for one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century.
In 1987, arranged through his close friend Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jr. met composer Andrew Lloyd Webber in the south of France. For nearly two and a half hours, Davis performed the score privately, pouring his soul into “The Music of the Night.” Webber was deeply moved, briefly considering Davis to lead the Toronto production.
The casting never came to fruition. Yet Davis refused to let the music go, weaving the aria into his final concert appearances.
This rare 1988 television recording captures Davis at the peak of his interpretive powers. Applying decades of phrasing mastery from the Vaudeville and Rat Pack eras to Lloyd Webber’s soaring melodic lines, he transforms the Phantom’s darkness into a deeply personal confession.
Months after this broadcast, Davis was diagnosed with throat cancer—making this document not merely a performance, but a testament to a voice that refused to be silenced.
