Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta drone show illustrated the wonderful and ominous possibilities of flying gadgets, which are becoming a daily fixture in the skies over New Mexico and around the world.
At dawn, hundreds of drones sat in a neat grid on a gravel lot at the northwest portion of the launch field. Workers and volunteers crouched over the black devices, weighing no more than a few pounds, and loaded them with lithium-polymer batteries, one by one. It was the Balloon Fiesta’s fifth consecutive year putting on a drone show.
By 5:45 a.m., lights flickering, 500 drones lifted into the sky. They buzzed like bees, forming shapes like balloons, chiles and roadrunners.
The drones appeared to be communicating. Not quite.
“They’ve got secondary geofences that are built in around each drone — essentially like a safety ring,” said Stephanie Allison, creative director for FlyLight Drones, which put on the show. “And that’s a great feature because these drones are unaware of the fact that there are other drones in the sky.”
“So as far as it knows, it’s the only drone, and it’s doing a solo act,” Allison said. “It has no idea it is a part of a chorus.”Sandia National Laboratories officials have volunteered at the drone show over the past five years, studying how large groups of drones behave. These groups are often referred to as drone swarms — though there’s debate about whether that term is appropriate if the drones are not communicating with one another.
David Novick, a Sandia engineer, said there are many similarities “between the drone show and what we do.”
