When I'm feeling broken down, I've learned to stop. Realize what is broken. Assess the situation and determine what's needed. Then fix it.

The first time I learned to stop and be still wasn't on a road at all. I was 18, sitting by a creek in Northern California with my Bible open. Broken. I had just left college after a year of hard drugs. I knew all the rules. I had heard God loved me, but nobody had ever taught me how to be still, or how to meditate.

So I started practicing the discipline of solitude and meditation.

In one of those first moments, a red bird landed right in front of me. I had this overwhelming sense of God's presence, and I heard Him say in my heart, "I love you no matter what."

Not after I cleaned up. Not after some amazing accomplishment. No matter what. Right then. In the quiet. With a red bird.

He met me right where I was, not where I thought I should be.

If you're feeling something is broken, He's ready to meet you too. It simply takes stopping, being still, and inviting Jesus into your journey.

Who pulled over for you?

Not the person who fixed everything. The one who just stopped. Sat with you a while. Handed you a cup of water when you couldn't get it yourself.

Years ago, my grandfather's car broke down in Birmingham, and he was hitchhiking when a car pulled over. The driver was a pastor named Frank Barker.

He gave Pappy a hand, and somewhere in that roadside conversation he told him about Jesus. It changed our whole family.

It was simple. As a kid riding beside him, I watched Pappy slow down for folks on the side of the road, flat tire or not. He never asked who they were or whether they deserved it. He was always ready to help and share about Jesus, and how He had changed his life.

He was giving away what had been given to him. I think that's how Grace travels: from one who knows what it's like to be broken down and need a helping hand, to the next. Jesus. by @abrentgage

I've known some high places, and some low ones. More than once I've ended up broken down on the side of the road. Sometimes it was my truck, sometimes me.

And every time, Jesus stopped. Most often he came as a Brother or Sister who pulled over, knelt down in the gravel, and propped me back up.

This season, I'll be sharing that journey here. Not the cleaned-up version. Just a ragamuffin learning to be still, and finding grace in everyday life.
