Congratulations to @barandance on a super successful run of shows with the hauntingly beautiful @moa_nc. I had the distinct pleasure of developing a new work Arrow with some of the badass company artists.

During the process I was continually reminded how important it is to move our bodies in community.

I needed that reminder as I was reeling from the grief of losing my bestie @tabithacalloway. The dancers were patient with me as I tried to access creativity through the confusion, fog, and sadness of such immense loss.

They bring a vitality to their movement that helped me remember what a gift it is to be alive.

Thank you to the entire cast and director @audibaran
For sharing their gifts with me when I needed it most.

Featured artist: Alyah Baker – AB Contemporary Dance

Alyah Baker is a dance artist, scholar, and choreographer working at the intersection of art and embodied activism. She is an assistant professor of dance at UNC Charlotte, where her research focuses on queer aesthetics, Black feminist praxis, and community building through dance. Baker earned her MFA in Dance(’21) and a B.A. in Sociology (’03) from Duke University. She has trained and performed professionally with companies including Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Oakland Ballet, and Carolina Ballet, dancing featured roles in works by George Balanchine, Antony Tudor, Laura Dean, José Limón, and Alonzo King. Baker has received choreographic commissions from the American Dance Festival, Queering Dance Festival, North Carolina Dance Festival, and Oakland Ballet, and has been recognized in local and national media, including Dance Teacher Magazine and the New York Times.

It’s with a very heavy heart I share that my dearest @tabithacalloway, a best friend for half of my life suddenly and unexpectedly passed away this week just days after her 45th birthday.

Tabitha was a beloved partner, parent, daughter, sister, and the best friend that anyone could ask for. She was a steady, grounding force for all who loved her, an incredibly hard worker, strong leader, and always up for a good laugh and adventure. I am utterly heartbroken by her passing.

She leaves behind her wife, Amy; her son, Zuri; her siblings, Phillip and Ericka; her father, Jerry; countless cousins; many friends; and chosen family who love her dearly.

If you can, I ask that you show your love for Tabitha and support her family through this incredibly difficult time by contributing to Tabitha’s funeral fund.

Funds raised will go towards laying Tab to rest in a manner befitting this beautiful human with any remaining funds put in an education fund for Zuri.

Happy World Ballet Day! Ballet has been one of the most meaningful and formative things in my life for as long as I can remember. Grateful for everything it has taught me, for all the wonderful people and experiences it has brought to my life, and for the opportunities to continue to share my love for the art form.
