Known to most in the industry as one of the leading hairstylists with clients ranging from Mulberry to Beauty Papers, @soichiinagaki has also another outlet for his artistry: creating one-of-a-kind metal and silver pieces that defy categorisation. @mrstephenwebster is the rare kind of fine jeweller - equally at home in glitzy Mayfair salons as he is cruising down the back roads in his 1959 cherry red Ford Thunderbird. He brings that duality to his designs - elegant but with a dangerous edge rarely found at this kind of price tag.

“Our ambition was a townhouse. And I walked down this street like you; I had no idea that these buildings were like that. And this spot, number 12 and 13, was a James Bond pop-up shop. And I’d done the jewellery for Skyfall. And I was walking past and a woman said, “Stephen”, and it was a woman I’d worked with on Skyfall. She said, “Come in” and she takes me downstairs and it was a bar. Everything was gold. Because it was 60 years of Goldfinger. And when they left, because she said it’s just a pop-up, I was like, “Okay, I’ve got to take space.” I didn’t know it had four floors!”

Rock royalty through and through, @mrstephenwebster has many reasons to claim that title. He makes hard-edged fine jewellery favoured by the likes of Axl Rose, Steven Tyler, Madonna or the late Ozzy Osbourne. He also has the charisma befitting a rockstar - and stories to match. For issue one, we got him to spill some of those - from selling his first piece to Elizabeth Taylor to clubbing with Macaulay Culkin and designing a necklace for Britney Spears that said „Too drunk to fuck” (rejected, sadly, by her team). “I knew that I had some sort of talent to do something… not even just to create something. It’s starting from very small beginnings. I knew that I was good at art. I understood about colour and proportion and texture. I knew music, which was maybe even more important to me than knowing fashion.
But to me, the worlds of music and fashion were so completely interlinked. What were my influences back then? It was Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry and David Bowie. And, you know, were they more important for their visuals, or more important for their music? I don’t really know. And, certainly, as a 17 year old or 18 year old, and in the days before the internet and easy dissemination of visuals, music was the thing with which you communicated. Not fashion.”
