Southbound Amtrak Cascades Train #519 is seen booking it south past the Richmond Park Beach with the last lighting on the Puget Sound of the evening available with an interesting NPCU “Cabbage” F40 leading the way. Thanks to clueless beach-goers walking all along the tracks, we were able to get a nice welcoming from the crew on their journey south for Seattle.

Slides from Dayton, Ohio proved successful on the CSXT Toledo Subdivision through Washington Street with friendly crews, a mow train, and plenty of EMD’s to go around. This was on the return from my 2025 Chicago trip and I would for sure go back if I could.

611 Trip 2025: After being picked up by @ac6ocw so we could both be in place for our friend @va_.thrillseeker to pick us up in the morning, we would catch wind of a loading coal train with a solo Mac leading with our good friend as engineer. After riddling it with flashes, we retreated to bed for some short lived rest before being picked up for the 611 day to begin. Arriving in Staunton, VA nice and early, we would work our way to the where the 611 was sitting at the start of the excursion site. Battling frigid temperatures that morning, we would start our chase after I bought a DJI mini 3 from a fellow. I used the drone accordingly, evident by the several high perspective shots. By the time the first excursion was finished, we would take a lunch break. We would catch rumors that a grain train with two YN2 AC44s leading. Considering the units were/are on borrowed time, we swung over to “Broad Mountain” in Swoope, VA. We would came in contact with the train and other railfans, whom were awaiting 611 to meet the train. After having to do a peculiar move due to the grain train being too long for the siding, the grain and 611 departed. We opted for the grain train, chasing it to one more spot before calling it a day.

On the way back, we heard that the Norfolk Southern safety train, a dedicated train set for training first responders in the event of a train derailment or emergency, would be running. After debating where to go, we settled for Starts Draft after seeing a clear signal for the correct direction. Unfortunately, it would pan out to be a manifest train and not quite what we were looking for. After exhausting our options and driver, we heading for home.

Unbeknownst to us, whilst we were away a loaded coal train derailed near Providence Forge on the peninsula sub, deeming our line landlocked. Well over 15 cars derailed as well as both DP motors, one motor (CSXT 263, YN2 locomotive) being scrapped due to frame damage beyond repair. We went out the next day, finding a U216 running to the derailment site to pick up the cars that did not derail or were not to damaged. We would conclude after chasing him for over 30 miles. He (U216)had a speed limit of 15 MPH. taken in Virginia by @ac6ocw

Looking through old slides takes us to the tail end of my Chicago Trip, where we would chase Newport News Export train C209-22 from Meadow Creek, West Virginia just up the road to Sandstone, WV before breaking off and intercept a doubled up G770-22 @ CP Low Moor, just west of Clifton Forge thundering west on their journey to eventually intercept the loads around Hinton. The worker in the MOW truck at Low Moor was cool and gave us a heads up about this train coming out, thanks again buddy.

Simpler times takes us back to August 21, 2025, when me and my father made a last stop at Dolton Junction, Illinois before hitting the road for home on our Chicagoland Trip. Pictured in brilliant afternoon lighting, we are treated with an old CSX Dash 8 leader, #7903 slowing onto their approach on train M642-21 (Avon - Clearing) into Clearing Yard for their eventual termination. Meeting them shooting eastbound is high priority intermodal I104-21, sporting a rebuilt SD70AC #4762 in the lead, throttling up while beginning their journey from Bedford Park - South Kearney. This was one hell of a meet and I’d do a lot to go back and watch this unfold one more time.

A short evening on the peninsula starts us out @ CA 44.6, where we see a short 90-car C744-13 from Mettiki, followed by a slow-rolling B407-10, with the classic #147 sporting a Narrow Font K5LA. I was able to chase him up to the beginning of double track @ the CA 42.9 and get a friendly welcome from Mr. Graves at the helm.

Not-so-average leader eastbound @ the 44.6 on your average C206-19, 110 cars in tow. Was hoping for a Narrow Font but was left with a junker Raised Letter K5LA on this one.
