What makes ICU nursing more than just a job?

For ACCCN’s CEO Rand Butcher, it is the combination of complexity, clinical autonomy, multidisciplinary teamwork and a strong sense of purpose.

In intensive care, no two shifts are the same. Nurses think critically, make meaningful contributions to patient care and work alongside a team of healthcare professionals who bring different expertise to every situation.

It is challenging work, but for many ICU nurses, that is exactly what makes it so rewarding.

What do you love most about critical care nursing?

Honouring a pioneer. Celebrating excellence in critical care nursing.

Professor Sharon McKinley was a trailblazer whose remarkable contributions to research, education and clinical practice helped shape critical care nursing in Australia and internationally.

As Australia's first Professor of Intensive Care Nursing, a Fulbright Scholar and an internationally recognised researcher, Sharon dedicated her career to advancing nursing practice and improving patient outcomes.

At the 2026 ASM, ACCCN was proud to present the inaugural Professor Sharon McKinley Award, established in recognition of her extraordinary legacy.

Congratulations to Sarah Rooney, our inaugural award recipient!

Sarah received the award for her paper, 'Healthcare professional perspectives on involving patients and carers with diverse cultural or linguistic characteristics in escalating clinical deterioration concerns'.

Her work explores an important aspect of patient safety and inclusive care, reflecting the commitment to research and improving patient outcomes that Sharon championed throughout her career.

Through this award, Sharon's legacy will continue to inspire and recognise excellence in critical care nursing for generations to come.
