“The Hero’s Journey”

A physical representation of the 12 steps of Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Journey”. A massive undertaking on all fronts for everyone involved...and it was constant hard work. Every day, no slacking off. A lot of failures, moments of frustration, but an incredible experience and reward for all. I was constantly editing and changing and adapting to make the story more clear and more accurate to the original source, right down to an hour before The Gala, quite literally. And ten minutes is a LOT of material for high schoolers to be accountable for…. Ten FULL minutes, not just slowly movement that takes time. Forever proud of what we accomplished and everyone involved 🩵♥️🤎. The 12 Steps of The Hero’s Journey are:

1. Ordinary World: The audience meets the Hero in the Ordinary World.

2. Call To Adventure: The Hero receives the Call To Adventure, a challenge, quest, or problem that must be faced.

3. Refusal Of The Call: The Hero express fear and is reluctant of The Call.

4. Meeting The Mentor: An individual who provides encouragement and wisdom to push the Hero past fear and doubts.

5. Crossing The Threshold: The Hero accepts the challenge and enters the Special World.

6. Tests, Allies, Enemies: The Hero faces tests, encountering allies and enemies.

7. Approach To The Inmost Cave: The Hero prepares for the central conflict.

8. Ordeal: The Hero faces his greatest fear and tastes death.

9. Reward: The Hero enjoys the Reward (Greater Knowledge, Insight, or Power) after confronting death. 
10. The Road Back: The Hero recommits to completing the Journey.

11. Resurrection: The Hero faces the climatic ordeal that purifies, redeems, and transforms the Hero.

12. Return With The Elixir: The Hero returns to the Ordinary world a changed man, and looks forward to the start of a new life. by @accentondance

12 years without our Miss Mary 🪽

What started with Miss Mary’s love of dance has grown into 49 seasons of dancers, families, teachers, memories, and a legacy that continues to grow every year. Today, AOD is so much more than what she started in the basement of a bowling alley. It’s generations of dancers, families, teachers, traditions, memories, and so many people who have found a place to belong. And if you’ve been around AOD long enough, you know Miss Mary is still sprinkled into so much of it. From her famous love of paddle turns, to her “FANCEFT” license plate, to the joy she had in watching her grandchildren dance and seeing the AOD family grow around them.

The best part of her legacy isn’t just what AOD became, it’s that it never stopped growing. So as we head into another season, we’re celebrating the woman who started it all, the little basement that started a big story, and everything AOD continues to become. 49 seasons later, we’re still dancing, still growing, and still carrying a little piece of Miss Mary with us 💜🦋 #growingupaod by @accentondance
