Generations of migration, cultural exchange and assimilation has evolved African and diaspora communities into thriving economies making significant contributions to the continent and global popular culture. Remittance inflows to the continent from the diaspora is estimated at $124 billion annually. Equalling roughly 6% of global GDP. Ghana alone receives between $3-5 billion and year.

A woman who needs no introduction, a stalwart of contemporary Ghanaian art, Betty Acquah. What captivates me the most about her work is how it captures dreamscapes that almost invoke nostalgia living in a world between imagination and memory.

There is a warmth that pierces through the canvas that is tactile. Her masterful use of color delineates the background from the figures in a harmonious choral. There is a sense that these figures are not merely subjects on a canvas but a relative a close friend or a loved one. People whose presence carries the familiarity of home. Inextricably linked to the nurturing and communal Ghanaian spirit. Shaped in large part by the women and matriarchal figures in Ghanaian society that Acquah represents in her work. Through it she has paved the way for aspiring female artists to follow.

The Nsoromma Group Show brings together selected participants from the Rising Star 2026 cohort. Nsoromma, which translates as “children of the stars,” draws on the symbolism of stars as a way of looking into the personal cosmologies of the participating artists.

Through painting, installation, and mixed media, the exhibition explores ancestry, guidance, identity, spirituality, migration, ritual, and self-discovery. The works consider how identity continues to take shape through relationships with family, community, history, and place, while cultural memory meets contemporary experience.

Rather than presenting fixed answers, Nsoromma invites viewers to move through the works as they might a night sky, finding connections and forming their own interpretations.

As a presentation of emerging artists from the Rising Star 2026 cohort, the exhibition reflects a generation of artists exploring where personal histories, inherited knowledge, and contemporary realities meet.

Nsoromma is currently on view until 2 September 2026.

Last week, the Art of Collecting brought together collectors, artists, curators, gallerists, and art lovers for an open and engaging conversation about what it means to build a collection responsibly. The conversation gave both new and experienced collectors practical insights and plenty to think about.

From understanding the market, exploring your taste, and embracing art collecting as a form of cultural stewardship, the thoughtful exchange between the panelists and the audience reinforced the power in community. It is the connections, and relationships that help build shared value around common interests.

From developing your eye and discovering what you love, to understanding the role of galleries, navigating acquisitions, thinking about value, and embracing art as a form of cultural stewardship,

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to our wonderful panelists for sharing their knowledge so generously, and to @sankofagallery for hosting us.

We look forward to welcoming you at our next event and to the growth of Accra’s collector community.

Albert Nii Nortey Dowuona is an artist and educator based in Accra, Ghana. His multidisciplinary practice explores identity, memory, and cultural history through installation, African wax print, photography, printmaking, and digital media. Using African wax print as both material and archive, he investigates how textiles preserve social narratives, cultural memory, and collective identity. Through layered installations combining image, sound, objects, and archival materials, his work examines how histories are recorded, reenacted, and continuously reinterpreted.

His recent project, The Script of Cloth: Reenacting Social Histories Through African Wax Print, explores wax print as a living historical script shaped by motifs, oral traditions, and everyday naming practices.

Dowuona has participated in exhibitions including Accra In Motion (2024), the Woori Art Festival (2023), and The KNUST Muse_um is A_muse_um (2011). He has completed residencies with Accra In Motion, Blue Canvas Studios, and CRITLAB, and his work has been featured in Forbes and Made in Bed (Sotheby’s Institute of Art). His works are held in private and corporate collections.

Baaba Sarpong (b. 2000, Accra, Ghana), is a contemporary artist practicing painting in Accra. In terms of her artistic practice, Baaba focuses on figural abstract subjects, which involve the human form, biological, and psychological systems in connection with trauma, as they use the symbolic language of neural patterns that depict an internal strength.
Her artworks have received much attention in several important institutions such as galleries and museums, among which the National Museum of Ghana, “The Triune Being.”

Moreover, her art works have been displayed in group exhibitions, including “MenstruART” at The Mix Design Hub Gallery, as well as “A Palette of History” at Heritage 100. She has been honored in a reputable magazine “The Gourd Magazine,” and her achievements have been highlighted in several publications such as a “Spotlight Artist” at CCART in 2026. Baaba continues working towards a multi-disciplinary approach to the transformational potential of human trauma

Title: Emi naowo (Me and You)
Size: 35cm x 35cm
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

This painting, embraces the importance of human connection and the strength born from shared experiences, particularly in the context of trauma healing. The two women adorned in vibrant scarves are not mere figures on a canvas; they symbolize the strength found in community and understanding. As their heads come together in a gesture of intimacy and solidarity, they represent the importance of leaning on one another during life’s most challenging moments.

The color red, often associated with passion and love encircles the subjects and portrays their intertwined experiences (together not just by embrace but by stories of struggle, pain, and healing). Challenging the isolation that often accompanies trauma.

Title: Amo b) wonkankyi (Divine Presence)
Size: 123cm x 105cm
Medium: Limited Edition signed paper print (1 of 1)

The intention of this piece is to bring to mind, a sense of quiet reassurance. It is a reminder that we are not truly alone in our journeys. The angels, rendered in ethereal hues, are not necessarily literal beings, but rather a symbolic representation of this constant, unseen support system.
