From as long as I remember, I’ve wanted to live my life the way I wanted to live it. I was not afraid to be judged; I didn’t really care what people said about me. I was poked fun at in high school by my classmates because of my sobriquet, Acey and because I was not from the same social class as them. I was warned countless times by my mother and sometimes by friends about what people would say or think if I did this or that... I just went my own way and did what I wanted. Of course, I took the responsibility. Someone told me that I’m like a rhino, stubborn at getting what I wanted. I didn’t really walk the line. I preferred to walk on the edge rather than let people limit my horizons and dreams and what I wanted to take from this little while I am given to explore and experience on this planet. It wasn’t always easy but it was rewarding and worth every single effort. I tried to surround myself with people who would encourage me rather than dishearten me; people who would be intrigued when I said “why not” rather than “why”; people who said: “do it if you want, you can” rather than “don’t, it’s dangerous and risky” Cuz guess what? At the end of the day, we only have one life to live. ⁠

I know this by experience and yet when it comes to taking a leap of faith, I’m still scared. I moved to 5 countries all by myself, without knowing anyone there before moving. I left my secure well-paid job in engineering once to study art history at the age of 31, at the time when I had not yet lived one year as a skilled immigrant in Canada. I came back to tech market after I got my MA, shifted career and worked as a data scientist. And yet, taking a leap of faith still feels scary.
Before going on my first solo-hike in Switzerland in a mountain I saw for the first time, first solo-camp for a week, first solo backpacking for 5 months, moving to BC during the pandemic and living in 6 places in 6 months, I was scared too but the excitement and the adrenaline rush pushed me to take the leap. Not only did I not regret any of those decisions, but also were they always rewarding. I grew, got to know myself better and learned a lot along the way.
And yet, taking a leap of faith still feels scary.

While I’m designing the third photo book from our adventures in British Columbia, I couldn’t help but sneak into the photos of other adventures on different corners of the world. There is always the unknown, the unexpected, the mishap, and even arguments. But there is one thing clear; Franck is the most adventurous person I know who pushed me out of my comfort zone and whom I trust when it comes to evaluating risks, planning, and navigation. I miss those moments of challenge in some of the most fascinating places on this earth.

We are living through dark times. We Iranians outside Iran have been glued to our phones for the past two weeks. Our lives have been disrupted; we cannot properly sleep or function. Anxiety is through the roof. We are on a roller coaster of emotions; anger, sadness, disappointment, aloneness, frustration, restlessness, grief, mourning, hopefulness and hopelessness morphing into one another.

We have been through this many times, but this time has by far been the worst. Yesterday, I thought to myself that this is a marathon. It’s a long road. It’s called “the pain of being Iranian.”

But even on this road, life must go on.

One of the things that grounds me in dark times like this is cooking a Persian dish. It soothes me and reminds me of the richness of our culture, of hope, resilience, perseverance, and of courage. A culture so strong that it rose after the Mongol, the Arab, and Alexander’s invasions.
If you’re Iranian, cook a Persian dish or go out and eat one. Better yet, do so with your friends and/or family. It will help. I promise.

In these times of darkness when my people are being slaughtered by the ruthless regime that’s been ruling over them for nearly 5 decades, and we feel helpless carrying this pain of being an Iranian, you gave me a few moments of calm…
