Australia without its koala should be unimaginable. It’s listed as endangered in the ACT, NSW and Queensland. It should be impossible in those states especially for vital habitat to be destroyed. That’s exactly what’s happening right now at Ormiston College in Queensland. Replacing lost trees with plantings won’t help the local koalas like Leaf and Monty that are losing their homes and feeding trees. The school claims to want to create habitat for koalas. It’s very clear they already have resident koalas and should be prevented from cutting down their trees. Having koalas in your school grounds is an incredible privilege, it’s disgraceful to see the destruction that’s already happened. This needs to be called in. Wilful destruction of koala habitat should be prevented by governments at all levels. For Labor politicians that promised zero extinctions this is happening right now on your watch. Call it in. by @acfcanberra

The Independent Planning Commission has given a massive fuck you to everyone that’s not HVO by approving a massive coal mine for the full 19 years ina climate emergency. Glencore and Yancoal need a transition strategy for its workforce. The earth is burning, we’re losing homes, habitat, species and communities but 1,500 jobs were saved…the economic argument is going to start looking a bit shit when farmers can’t grow food, workers can’t do their jobs outside, schools are closed from climate disasters and hospitals filled with smoke and heat impacted patients. Then there’s the repairs and rebuilding of homes and community after the climate disasters. Let’s make sure Glencore and Yancoal pay the bill for their climate damage that they directly cause.

Urggghhh! They’re back again! Going on about a gas exports tax. We’ve put up massive billboards about how great we are and all the corporate tax and helping people with gas stuff. Let’s hope the politicians don’t hear this lot talking about over 70% or 50% gas exports tax, we want 0% so there’s more for the Bolly fund. Ok friends, you’ve got until midnight tomorrow to make a quick submission on the HVO continuation project. The Independent Planning Commission has asked what the shortest extension period is to transition the workforce. Funnily enough, HVO has responded with they need the full 19 years to be economically viable…they also don’t think the scope 3 emissions should be looked at and just want to tell the Commission to do what they tell them. We can’t have coal for another 19 years. Glencore and Yancoal have had two decades to create an exit strategy for its workforce, the fact they didn’t bother doing their homework because they thought they could get away with it should not be accepted as an excuse. The earth is burning and coal needs to stay in the ground. Transition the workers and close the mine. HVO have had enough time to help their employees they’ve just chosen not to. by @acfcanberra

🎬 FILM SCREENING: TALLAGANDA – Endangered Greater Gliders on the NSW South Coast
Just a few hours from Canberra, deep in the towering wet eucalypt forests of Tallaganda, lives one of Australia’s most elusive and endangered native species — the Greater Glider. 🌿
Join us on National Threatened Species Day to watch TALLAGANDA, a powerful short film by award-winning South Coast filmmaker David Gallan, followed by a Q&A panel.
The film features ANU researchers Professor David Lindenmayer and Dr Ana Gracanin, and shines a light on the conservation fight to protect Greater Gliders in Tallaganda, Badja and Glenbog State Forests — still under threat from industrial logging.
Using innovative techniques — including groundbreaking recordings from inside a greater glider den tree — this film is not to be missed.

An honour to join the historic first meeting since last century to end native forest logging and clearing.

Australia’s national environment and climate groups with regional and grassroots forest organisations met to collaborate on a national campaign to protect native forests by ending native forest logging and clearing.

Former Environment Minister, Honourable Bob Debus, said: “The conservation of the forests is one of the best ways we have to arrest climate change. Strong community support will be the best way to get political action.”

The Australian Conservation Foundation’s President Ros Harvey said: “Native forests stop global warming. By coming together, we’re growing a people-powered movement to protect native forests and cut climate pollution. The public wants to see an end to native forest logging, and by working together, we’ll make it happen.”

Campaigns Director at Bob Brown Foundation, Jenny Weber, said: “Native forest logging and clearing has zero social licence and it must be halted across the nation.  We are united in a renewed effort to build resistance to ongoing native forest destruction.  Protecting native forests is an immediate solution to ensuring water security and addressing the extinction and climate crises we all face.  Nationwide, all native forests need immediate protection without compromise.” Melanie Audrey, The Wilderness Society Biodiversity Policy Campaign Manager said:  “With government failing to protect our forests, conservation organisations and grassroots groups are coming together to demand a national approach – because protecting Australia’s forests can’t be left to communities to fight one forest at a time.” Photo credit: Hillary Wardaugh by @acfcanberra

You’ve still got time. Submissions opposing the largest ever coal project in NSW, HVO Continuation, close at midnight tonight. This one project is the equivalent of 7 year’s worth of NSW’s annual emissions. NSW already has a 6.6 million tonnes emission gap and this project will add 800 million tonnes in downstream emissions. There are 1,500 workers and Yancoal and Glencore are failing them, no exit strategy despite knowing for two decades that they needed one. Instead their workers are making adverts and submissions to save their jobs. It’s unethical. These companies should be transitioning their workforce, there’s a job and skill shortage in the Hunter Valley. There is life beyond the coal face and we cannot afford for the climate disasters this project will bring. Link in bio. by @acfcanberra

Look, we understand that a triptych isn’t for everyone, but this briefing on HVO Continuation is really, rather important. We’ve done you a TLDR (Watch ) version. Just a minute. Is 800 million downstream emissions in a climate crisis all that bad, it’s only another 20 years of coal? We’ve told the devoted employees that it’s jobs for the next generation…it’s a stretch but everyone knows that 20 years to develop an exit strategy is so unreasonable when you’re focused on extraction and shareholder profit. NSW are already failing to meet their emission target, so might as well go hard and burn the whole world down. Do, do write in support, deadline midnight Wednesday. by @acfcanberra

Bringing you the “what’s behind the yellow fence, perhaps it won’t be visually intrusive…” big reveal. We’ve gone from degraded to destroyed grasslands on the corner, with no hope of bringing back any native flora or grasses in the seed bank. Let’s not pretend that trees will make it any better. Landscaping should be directed by the grassland restoration plans, not Indara’s poorly designed landscaping and inappropriate plantings. Time for the ACT Government to show any level of care for the environment, Ainslie community and the Friends of Ainslie Volcanics Grasslands.
In good news, we had a glorious morning planting and actively restoring the grasslands, for free, whilst corporate entities burden us with a visually intrusive tower that will deliver poor reception, particularly if you’re a Villager. If only the community were listened to. by @acfcanberra
