A series where I explore and amplify the stories that make art, art! Follow for more.

THIS EPISODE:
The Zoroastrians migrated from Greater Iran to Gujarat between the 8th and the 10th century, fleeing religious persecution. In India, they have thrived and prospered in all walks of life from Bollywood to business, Parsis have grown into one of the most prosperous communities in India.

India, which is home to around 70,000 Parsis, that is, around half of the total Zoroastrians in the world.

In the 1980’s Parsi women were responsible for the brainwave of bringing the biggest (and first) international rock act, @thepolicebandofficial to India, effectively setting up the stage for modern rock to take hold.

A day I’ll always remember ❤️

On Saturday, a long time dream came true.
A dream that started with me singing on stage from the age of 3. From all the competitions, shows, piano exams and classes my mom and dad took me to. From moving to a new country and starting from scratch again. From busking on the street, to playing one of the biggest stages in Canada.

All while repping the motherland, my own unique style, MY VISION COME TO LIFE.

I’m at a loss for words truly, my heart is overflowing with love and gratitude. First and foremost to God, to @houseof.bala and the Desifest team for believing in the vision and pushing the culture forward.

To my incredible, incredible band for all the hard work and rehearsals. I’m so lucky to share the stage with not only insane talent, but humans I share personal connection, friendship, and love with @therealloupwolf @kalidasunnikrishnan @soundsfromrooh @skepticacid.io @singingofbreaths This is what it looks like to build community, together.

Also shoutout to the friends who show up for me, literally and figuratively, with signage and posters!! Ily 😭

What a feeling, to put together an AMBITIOUS AFFFF set list of seven languages, weird time signatures, prog rock, Carnatic mash ups, original music and more together, and see it come to life. What a feeling to have thousands of people singing back at you, dancing, cheering you on. What a feeling to have my family travel from far and wide to come and witness me in my element, bless me with their tears, and tell me how proud my parents are of me, to have kids tell me they inspire me, to have older people offer me their sarees, and tell me they have “Faith in the new generation of musicians”.

I could say “on to bigger and better things”, but in this moment,
in my heart,
we’ve already made it.

being a diaspora Indian is so unsettling right now. Like wdym I’m sitting at work, going out to buy coffee, when these BRAVE kids are being beaten by the police at Jantar Mantar??

My birthday is next month. August 15th.
Indian Independence Day.
It used to be a day that filled me with pride for my country. Now, I’m watching the death of democracy, through a screen.

I still love my country. Just not the goons who run it, or the system that continues to fail it.

BUT THESE GENZ KIDS, MAN!!!!
All of this may not amount to much, but the sheer courage, bravery, kindness, SARCASM I have seen from this generation gives me hope. The fact that they’re handing roses to the same police beating them up. The fact that strangers from all over the country are paying for and sending the protestors food.
THAT is the India I know and love.

I was supposed to be promoting an exciting music update but I just can’t get myself to. It feels icky and disconnected since this is taking up all my mental real estate.

So I decided to share this, for anyone on this side of the world who doesn’t know what’s going on, for NRIs around me, to feel some kind of solidarity, but mostly for myself. To vent.

Hi! I’m Chantelle 🌻
Also Achanté. That’s my artist persona.

I’m suddenly getting a lot of new followers, so I’m taking a page out of hg @fenifinamusic ‘s book, and thought I’d (re)introduce myself!

I’m actually really happy the video that went viral is one of me, in my element, in the elements. Aka chilling in a river in a thunderstorm lol, just being real. So I guess that’s the first thing to know about me. I’m a nature junkie. A mermaid. A moss girl.

Other times my videos have gone viral, are me talking about mangoes from a local food truck, shining a light on how Parsi aunties brought international rock to India, and munching on a 100 million year old flower, the magnolia. Obviously, I love food (making it, eating it), discovering the best places, travel and adventure, history, art and culture.

What hasn’t gone viral yet, is my music.

Buts that’s okay, because that’s not why I make it. I make music because it’s like breathing air. It fills my heart cup. And I’m still discovering my shifting, changing global identit(ies) through it, which is why music is “genrefluid”. It will either move you, or make you move. I have about 13 songs out, including collabs. I can send you a link to them if you like!

मी मुंबईची मुलगी आहे 🫶🏽lived the first 26 years of my life in a place called Bandra, in Mumbai, India. It’s a beauuuutiful place, filled with stories, community and a special warmth I can’t really describe. I’ve lived in Toronto for close to 7 years now.

I like being politically outspoken, i LOVE to dance and swim, collect did-you-know facts, have great sense of style, be a plant mom, and romanticize life. In fact, I think I AM a plant. If I don’t get enough sunlight, I wither and fade.

Girlhood saves me every day. Community will keep me going in the long run.

Life has been simultaneously the kindest, and harshest teacher. And I am its lifelong student.
