Last summer in the Dolomites, I was never interested in conquering a mountain that didn’t have a lake to reach to.

We climbed, hitchhiked with strangers, got caught in a snowstorm, found shelter through an offline @alltrails map, stayed overnight, and eventually made it back safely.

I never reached the volcanic lake.

But somewhere in this white landscape, I felt my mum very close to me. Not in a dramatic way—more like a presence, a kind of protection.

Maybe we have always climbed because we want to get closer to what is above us—the Tower of Babel, heaven, God, whatever name we give the unreachable.

On this night, I believe I was climbing toward my mum.

I kept going higher, as if altitude could shorten the distance between the living and the dead.

It didn’t.

But somewhere in the snow, the mountain became a threshold—a place where the world I knew felt briefly suspended, where strangers appeared, paths disappeared, and the person I could no longer reach somehow felt near.

Maybe that is as close as we get.

Not reaching them.

Just entering a place where, for a moment, they can reach us.

To all my adventurous friends, please be careful out there! I’ll be back in spring 2027!

This hidden beauty in Yerevan brings back all the wonderful memories of my grandmother in Damascus. People talk about women’s rights and domestic violence, yet here is a vulnerable scene—a heavenly voice and wool hanging out to dry, all for the comfort of men.
