San Francisco's Acid King (@acidkingrocks) were at the forefront of the stoner rock and psychedelic doom metal movements coming out of California in the early 90s. 33 years later, they continue to hypnotize crowds by unfurling thick suffocating blankets of hazy distorted sound.

The Bay Area trio played the @pickathon Woods Stage on Friday, July 31st, delivering a set that we'd continue to hear about throughout the weekend. I was reluctantly convinced to miss it in favor of something else, but from what we heard, it was all-out pandemonium that resulted in security being brought in to contain it.

The next day, we managed to catch a brief recording session with the band at the unadvertised SLAB stage, where I managed to get a portrait of them posing in front of a sick-ass painting of skeleton horses and flames.

With her small stature, frontwoman Lori S. can be a somewhat unassuming figure, until she picks up her guitar and sends her reverb-drenched vocals rippling into the Stratosphere. The members are incredibly approachable despite the brutality of their riffs. One moment they're opening a hell mouth, unleashing all manner of demonic spectres from the netherworld, and the next, they're thanking everyone for showing up and handing out guitar pics, or affably waving from the gator as they roll by.

This clip was shot at a 1pm Sunday set in the Galaxy barn. The moshpit didn't get out of hand or plunge the room into bedlam as it had in the Woods, but the doom still rose from the Earth like magma; a sonic behemoth striking us square in the chest. The toned down afternoon lessened the risk of my camera getting smashed into pieces.

ACID KING was another great booking adding dimension to Pickathon's lineup and I love it when we see artists enjoying the property throughout the festival. Later that afternoon, we found the imposing leather vest-clad body of bassist, Bryce Shelton gently swaying in a hammock. They belong here. taken in Pickathon by @acidkingrocks
