facial recognition technology is fundamentally unreliable

In September 2023, Jason Killinger was arrested at Peppermill Casino in Reno when casino security suddenly surrounded him, took him to the casino’s security office and detained him until a Reno police officer arrived. Mr. Killinger was arrested because the casino’s facial recognition security camera system alerted to Mr. Killinger being a possible match for another individual who had been banned from the premises. by @aclunv

This Is Reno has joined a legal effort seeking public access to sealed records in NV Energy’s lawsuit against data center developer Tract and Reno Power. With @ournevadajudges @nevadapress Nevada Open Government Coalition and legal counsel by @aclunv and Luke Busby.

This Is Reno joined Our Nevada Judges, the Nevada Press Association and the Nevada Open Government Coalition in two motions filed Oct. 7. One seeks permission to intervene for the limited purpose of pursuing public access. The other asks the Washoe County court to unseal records in the case.

NV Energy alleges Tract is seeking enormous amounts of electricity for two large data centers in Storey County and wants to shift infrastructure and energy costs to Nevada customers. Tract disputes those claims and says enforcing its contract with NV Energy would allow nearly $1 billion in network upgrades benefiting ratepayers.

The coalition argues that confidentiality agreements alone do not justify sealing court records and that the public has an interest in information about the power agreements, potential arbitration and the possible impact of the projects on Nevada residents.

Attorneys Chris Peterson of the ACLU of Nevada and Luke Busby represent the coalition.

"CCSDPD’s ability to search or access surveillance-style data raises serious concerns about the tracking of students and families. This has occurred without Board authorization, public notice, or community input. This is a governance issue that cannot be handled solely through an internal review by CCSDPD and its new police chief" Stylized graphic of the ACLUNV's letter calling for the CCSD school board to have a public hearing on Flock. by @aclunv
