Proud that KERMEN e.V. and the Assembly of Crimean Organisations (ACO) partnered with the Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin 2026. The festival opened with a musical performance by Crimean Tatar singer Aziza Eskender, who brought Crimean folk songs and the history and culture of her people to the stage. We also presented Crimea. Isolation, a documentary by @cemaatmedia , offering audiences insight into life under occupation. The screening was followed by a discussion and a letter-writing initiative organised by @liberecophr in solidarity with Crimean political prisoners. It was a meaningful reminder of the importance of keeping Crimea in the international spotlight and ensuring that its people, culture, and stories continue to be heard. by @aco.qrm
Crimean political prisoner Lenur Khalilov, 58, is in critical condition in a prison hospital in Russia’s Arkhangelsk region. He has liver cancer with metastases, chronic hepatitis C and other serious illnesses. He reportedly suffers from severe pain and can barely move independently. Released on medical grounds in 2025, he was subsequently returned to prison. Despite his deteriorating condition, he remains in Russian custody without adequate specialised medical care. Lenur Khalilov urgently needs proper treatment and release to be reunited with his family. Do not let him die in prison. by @aco.qrm
At Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, @eskender_ant_etkenmen performed Crimea Behind Bars, drawing attention to Crimean political prisoners. We read their letters aloud to make their voices heard. The voices of political prisoners must be heard. by @aco.qrm
“One tooth a year, haha. And I still have another eight years ahead of me — at this rate, that could mean eight more teeth!” In a letter to his family, Crimean political prisoner Aziz Akhtemov. In September 2022, a Russian-controlled court in occupied Crimea sentenced Akhtemov to 13 years in prison. On 15 October, during the Crimea Behind Bars performance near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, Nina Masol, Second Secretary of the @ukrainische_botschaft , read his letter aloud. Crimea’s political prisoners must not be forgotten. They deserve dignity and access to adequate medical care. by @aco.qrm
As part of the @uff_berlin , we presented “Crimea: Isolation”, a documentary by @cemaatmedia exploring the realities of life under occupation and the persecution faced by people in Crimea. The screening was accompanied by a performance by @eskender_ant_etkenmen , a letter-writing initiative in support of political prisoners, and an exhibition by @liberecophr highlighting the stories of those deprived of their freedom. We extend our sincere gratitude to our partners, speakers, guests, and everyone who contributed to making this event possible. Your engagement and support help keep the stories of political prisoners visible and their experiences part of the wider public conversation. by @aco.qrm
Yesterday, at the screening of Crimea. Isolation as part of the @uff_berlin , @irieinhorn spoke about how we can support Ukrainian civilian prisoners and stand with their families. Write letters. Join demonstrations. Raise awareness and keep speaking about those who are still held captive. To learn more about how to write letters to prisoners, visit the Libereco website. Every action matters. No one should be forgotten. by @aco.qrm

Azat Qırım! A powerful performance by Aziza Eskender at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, raising her voice for a free Crimea and those who continue to fight for its freedom. by @aco.qrm
On 15 October, at Pariser Platz in Berlin, we came together to draw attention to the political prisoners of occupied Crimea and ensure that their stories are not forgotten. At the heart of the event were letters written by political prisoners. Through these personal messages, their voices reached the public beyond the walls of their confinement. Nina Masol, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Germany, read a letter by Aziz Akhtemov. Elvis Çolpuh, President of the Assembly of Crimean Organisations in Europe (ACO), read a letter by Appaz Kurtamet. Frank Wilde, mentor to political prisoner Bohdan Ziza, read a letter by the imprisoned artist. Crimean Tatar artist and performer Aziza Eskender presented a performance dedicated to the political prisoners of Crimea, drawing public attention to their situation and the ongoing repression under Russian occupation. Behind every political prisoner is a person. A family waiting for their return. A life interrupted. A voice that must not be forgotten. Their imprisonment must not mean their silence. We will continue to share their stories and draw attention to those imprisoned for their civic positions, peaceful activities and expression of dissent. Crimea must not be forgotten. Neither must those behind its bars. Foto: @kseniayanko.photography by @aco.qrm
