📍30 Oct | Fri | 6:30PM ➡️ A Common Ground Across South Asia, some of the most authentic and quietly radical design is happening at the margins of the profession: in studios working with displaced communities, in student theses that take gender and labour seriously as design questions, and in collectives building in disaster-prone zones. This talk discusses the role of design and architecture in shaping positive social impact across the region. Can architecture and design be practices of collective care rather than individual authorship? Free and open to all. RSVP on the BIC website. by @acommonground_du
Join us for a class with Jan Glasmeier, exploring the practice of designing with communities, his design process, and his experience teaching at the Earth Institute in Vienna. Jan is an architect and founder of Simple Architecture, established in Bangkok in 2016. An architect whose work explores the relationship between architecture, cultural building traditions, and community needs, Jan brings a wealth of experience in community-centred design. For eight years, Jan worked with migrant communities along the Thai–Burma border, building strong relationships and completing approximately fifty projects. His practice advocates for embracing traditional building knowledge and low-tech construction methods that respond to local contexts, use resources efficiently, and address the specific needs of individuals and communities. It is Jan’s mission to bring back low-tech methods of creating building solutions that are a direct response to the needs of individuals and communities. We look forward to an exchange on architecture, community, and social impact. Register to be a part of Jan Glasmeier’s Class! Link in bio. Registration is open until 25 October 11:00pm only. We are honoured to have Siddhartha Das as both as a jury member and as an advisor to A Common Ground. An exhibition designer, cultural strategist, educator, and scenographer, Siddhartha brings a multidisciplinary perspective to the intersections of museums, architecture, art, craft, and cultural heritage. An alumnus of Hindu College, University of Delhi, and the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, he founded Siddhartha Das Studio in 2002. His practice spans exhibition design, museum strategy, cultural installations, and craft-based livelihood initiatives. His notable projects include the Sardar Government Museum in Jodhpur, as well as exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Museum Rietberg, Zurich. Having worked closely with thousands of craftspeople across India, his work explores how material traditions, cultural knowledge, and storytelling can shape meaningful contemporary experiences. His perspective offers a valuable lens on how design can go beyond creating spaces and objects to preserve knowledge, foster connections, and bring communities and cultural narratives into dialogue. We look forward to his insights and perspectives at A Common Ground as we explore the possibilities of design in shaping more inclusive, culturally rooted, and socially meaningful futures. Join us at A Common Ground to engage with diverse perspectives and be part of a shared conversation on architecture, craft, culture, and social impact. We are delighted to have Ar. Shubhra Raje as a jury member for A Common Ground An architect, motivating educator, and founder of Shubhra Raje_Built Environments, she is also an Adjunct Professor and Chair of Architectural History and Research at CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Her work spans cultural, educational, and social spaces across India and the United States, community initiatives in Colorado, and the conservation of earthen structures in Egypt. Through her practice, research, and teaching, she explores how architecture can expand the possibilities of everyday life, questioning conventional ways of building and the relationships they sustain. Her interest in cultural and community institutions as contemporary public spaces foregrounds questions of belonging, collective identity, and the creation of common ground. Shubhra’s recent work examines the typology of warm houses in the Himalayas as module that can be appropriated in low cost housing in cooler climates of our region . As we reflect on what design makes possible, we look forward to Ar. Shubhra Raje’s insights on how architecture can move beyond the built form to reshape relationships, strengthen communities, and create spaces for collective life. Her perspective will contribute to the larger inquiry of A Common Ground.
