This book got me out of a reading slump. At what cost?

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, follows Patroclus, a young prince who is exiled from his home and sent to Phthia. There he meets Achilles, and what begins as friendship slowly grows into something more. But Achilles is destined for greatness, and everyone around him seems to know it long before he does.

What I loved most about this book was how simple it felt. There are no huge twists and no mystery about how it ends. You already know what's coming, yet I couldn't stop reading.

Patroclus was my favourite character from the very beginning. Everyone else seemed fascinated by Achilles because of who he would become, but Patroclus cared about who he already was. I loved seeing the story through his eyes and ended up far more attached to him than I expected.

Achilles really frustrated me towards the end. I understood the prophecy, I understood the pressure he was under, and I understood why honour and glory meant so much in that world. Still, I found myself getting angry with him. I kept thinking that he already had the one thing most people spend their entire lives looking for, and somehow it still wasn't enough.

What got me in the end wasn't the war or even the prophecy. It was how inevitable everything felt. Everyone knew where the story was heading, and there was never really a way around it.

Patroclus was the heart of this story for me. I'd spent so much of the ending being frustrated with Achilles, but the moment he asked for his ashes to be mingled with Patroclus', that anger felt stupid.

All I could think about was how much they had lost, and how none of it could ever be undone.

4.5⭐️

I've always loved Greek mythology, so I'm really glad I finally picked this up.

What's your favourite Greek mythology?

I keep looking for thrillers that feel different from each other.

Not just another detective, another missing person, another plot twist.

These all gave me something different to latch onto, whether it was the characters, the atmosphere, or a premise weird enough to keep me curious.

What should I add to my watchlist next?

sorry I disappeared.

work has been insane lately and honestly by the end of the day I barely have the energy to stare at a wall, let alone read.

I've been in a bit of a reading slump too, which is annoying because i keep buying books like i have all the time in the world.

anyway, thought i'd share a few life updates before disappearing again.

hopefully I'll be back with more books soon ✨️

Six people.
One impossible heist.
A Barrel thug… also a yearner.
His Wraith, who loves her knives a little too much.
A sharpshooter… also a yapper.
A merchling… also a sunshine who happens to make bombs.
A Grisha… with a big appetite and an even bigger heart.
A witch hunter… also a lover.

Never thought I’d love this book this much.
After so many disappointing reads, this was finally such a good one. Leigh’s writing was everything. Seeing the show first really helped me picture everyone while reading. Still not over Netflix canceling it.

Life felt a little too much, I ended up going on a trip with my cousins. It didn't fix everything, but it made my heart feel lighter for a while, full of jokes, laughs, long drives, and me fighting for my life with motion sickness the whole way 🫢😂 by @acornerformythoughts

Set in 1506 Joseon Korea, the story follows Iseul, whose life is upended when her sister is taken by the tyrant King Yeonsan. As she searches for answers, she crosses paths with Prince Daehyun, and together they are pulled into the dangerous politics, secrets, and violence of the royal court.

A Crane Among Wolves by June Hur was my second read of January, and honestly, I went in with high hopes. The reviews were great, the romance was hyped, and the premise sounded right up my alley. But… yeah, there’s always a but.

Even though it’s based on real historical events, the writing didn’t fully click for me. The story felt a bit rushed in places and underdeveloped in others. I was especially looking forward to the romance, but the dynamic between the FMC and the prince felt more like a missed opportunity than a slow burn. It just never hit emotionally.

The book doesn’t shy away from dark and traumatic themes, which I appreciated, but those moments didn’t carry the emotional weight they should have. The plot itself felt predictable, and I found myself anticipating major reveals long before they happened, which drained the tension from the story.

I don’t hate this book at all. If anything, it felt like a missed opportunity because the premise had so much potential. It just didn’t come together for me the way I hoped, and overall it ended up being a 2⭐️ read.
