REVIEW: Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett.

I don’t know how to start to review this. It’s probably my most re-read book ever. I first picked up a copy in a book shop in Saratoga, California, over thirty years ago, and I still find new things in it every time I pick it up. The story follows Captain Sam Vines, the drunk in charge of the city night watch, his rag tag colleagues, and new recruit, Carrot Ironfoundersson. We’re introduced to the main Discworld city of Ankh Morpork and its politics, as the city comes under siege by a dragon. Or a large wading bird.

Part mystery, part fantasy, part police procedural - I always recommend it as an entry point into the vast Discworld series. Pratchett has a knack of exposing humanity and all its flaws while making us laugh and then think. by @acozymoose

REVIEW: Death on a Lively Sea - @katywatsonauthor

Ahoy there! The three Dahlias are reunited once again, and tasked with investigating a potential murder… before it’s even happened! And helpfully, the victim-to-be has invited the Dahlias, and all the suspects, to spend two weeks on his luxury yacht in the Med.

While this can be read as a standalone, you would be missing out if you didn’t read every book in this fabulous series. The premise is clever, the writing exquisite, the plots twisty and satisfying.

The Three Dahlias are three actors of differing ages who have all taken on the role of fictional detective Dahlia Lively on TV and in movies, and were first thrown together at a fan-convention for the character that ended in murder. The cross-generational crime solving trio have been bound together ever since, and their relationship has moved from mistrust and suspicion to one of support and friendship and is so joyful to read.

Each of the Dahlias - Rosalind, Caro and Posy - bring their own strengths and skills to the problem solving, and they’re stronger together. They’re of differing ages and backgrounds, and each bring a different perspective to the table, and I love seeing them work through problems.

While Percy Pendleton is currently fearing for his own life, he also has suspicions that his father’s recent death may not have been due to natural causes, so the Dahlias find themselves with multiple problems to solve, and their investigations unearth deeper family secrets. But as the reality of being trapped at sea with a potential killer sinks in, the Dahlias find themselves in a race against time to solve the case before they find themselves in peril.

No matter what situation Katy Watson puts the Dahlias in, the actors-turned-sleuths shine, and their bond overcomes their differences to make an effective team.

One of the best murder-mystery series out there, and this new instalment doesn’t disappoint. by @acozymoose

REVIEW: The Tailor - Tim Sullivan

This is the first DS George Cross novel I listened to, and I’m kicking myself that it’s taking me so long to pick up one of these books.

A passenger gets on a train but never makes it to his destination, found dead in the toilet. The passenger is a bespoke tailor, and what follows is an intriguing investigation, verging into the murky world of espionage and a novel way of sneaking information out.

DS George Cross is autistic, and it’s a joy to see someone good at his job, and aware of his own limitations, and surrounded by people that work with him and find ways to accommodate his neurodivergence. He’s never seen as disabled but different, and being autistic myself, it’s amazing to see how he’s accommodated and just allowed to be himself. There’s humour in the situations he finds himself in, and his strengths are celebrated. He follows the evidence and works with what’s in front of him, and he’s excellent at picking apart little details to get to the right resolution.

I’m now going back and reading the entire series.

The audiobook is narrated by Finlay Robertson, and while he’s a great, clear narrator, I have a personal beef because he mispronounced a name in another series he narrated. He does read this one well though, and it’s an enjoyable listen, and look forward to the rest of the series on audio.

REVIEW: The Chocolatier's Curse by @chseto_author

We're having a heatwave at the moment in the UK, and I bought a bag of chocolate buttons, and left them on the kitchen worktop. When I finally got round to eating them, it was basically one big chocolate button.

And on the subject of cursed chocolate...

Graduate criminology student Theo Chan has to make alternative plans for his summer, when a trip to France falls through. Needing to find paid work, he follows up on a mysterious advert, and ends up taking an internship with a mysterious detective agency. Primrose Ghaust-Lee, who is legally blind, and Philip Teebin, the more outgoing and eccentric of the pair, run the agency that has little digital footprint, yet appears to be held in high esteem. They're looking for an assistant to take notes and make observations, while running the office.

Theo hasn't been working for the elderly pair for long, before they are called out to a small Pennsylvania town to investigate mysterious goings on at a family-run chocolate factory.

With threats, murder, and a super creepy clown mascot, the small town setting adds a claustrophobic feel to this intriguing mystery, that keeps the readers guessing right until the end.

Seeing the case through Theo's naive eyes, it's a really engaging read that often throws up more questions than it answers. There's an eerie feel to the writing, but moments of humour to keep it light. The detectives are skilled and perceptive, their appearance and age belying their skill, leading them to be underestimated, particularly by Theo himself. Ghaust-Lee and Teebin hold their cards close to their chest, and I suspect there's a lot more to learn about these two - they're a fascinatingly unconventional pair, and as this is the first in the Notes On A Murder series, I can't wait to find out more in the next novel!
