I went into a hot yin yoga class yesterday hoping for an assisted nap. My nervous system felt like it needed to chill the f out, and I was more than happy to oblige.

But instead, I spent the majority of those 60 minutes thinking (shocker). The instructor began class talking about the fall equinox, and the idea of transition, but not in the cozy, predictable way we usually frame the change of seasons. She spoke about balance, and how we tend to treat it like a fixed destination; somewhere we think we’ll eventually end up if we do enough, say yes enough, take on enough.

And as she spoke, certain questions kept popping up in my mind. Questions like:  “What are you holding onto too tightly?”
“Where can you relax your grip?”  “What are you afraid to let go of, or welcome in?”

It feels romantic to label fall as that “cozy” season, one in which you start slowing down (except maybe if you’re in the wedding industry). But sitting in that hot room, it felt like something a little sharper than that; less about forcing a pause, and more about noticing how much energy I’m spending to keep things feeling “perfect” or well-managed.

I walked back out into the cool air without the nap I’d gone in for, but realized maybe it wasn’t the thing I actually needed. On the drive home, I rolled down my window to catch that sharp, damp smell of fall and looked out at the colours already changing along the road. The trees aren’t fighting the drop of their leaves, and the leaves aren’t resisting the fall. It’s just a slow, unbothered surrender, and letting things shift in the way they’re meant to.

I’ve listened to Ludovico Einaudi’s Maria Callas hundreds of times. But how I hear it changes depending on the state of my mental health, what’s been on my mind lately, and how reflective I’m feeling.

Today while listening to it, I was overcome with a deep wave of nostalgia. Not for the loss of what once was, but for the frequency at which things change, and my inability to hold it all at one time (even though I know I’m not supposed to). And no matter how much I try to be present, my mind always seems to drift.

It’s an interesting paradox: the frantic pace of trying to raise (and keep up with) young kids during the busiest season in my business, sitting right alongside a yearning for stillness and individual identity.

I’ve been told my work has a sense of calmness to it. And I think unintentionally, I’m drawn to creating images that feel quiet and intimate because it’s my way of taking a visual deep breath. A way of clearing out room where the noise in my head finally has a chance to dissipate, and a practice of finding my way through.

I spend a lot of time watching how people take up space together.

Some need to be physically anchored, hands always finding each other, while others take comfort in simply standing near each other, content with shared glances.

There’s a certain pressure on a wedding day to perform your love; to show everyone in the room exactly how you feel for one another (like it wasn’t obvious enough…). But real chemistry is rarely loud. It’s the quiet weight of being entirely present with someone else, and the confidence in knowing you don’t have to prove a thing.

I love watching couples finally lean into whatever their specific version of that is. The kind of intimacy that doesn’t need to announce itself.

A sudden, visible softening the moment they can simply be.

Soon after we learn to see, we learn we can also be seen.

That awareness changes something.

It’s part of why being photographed can feel strange at first, even performative. You’re not just looking anymore; you’re being looked at.

But once the day settles into itself, and there’s room to breathe, most people stop noticing the camera.

The photos aren’t in the choreography of the day, but in that intimate, mutual noticing.

Recently, one of my couples spent their morning on a boat before sunrise. Just the two of them, coffee in hand, with no one else around (except me, casually third-wheeling).

They wanted to go into their wedding day feeling grounded. But it also did something else: it allowed them to go into their wedding without the pressure to fit it all into 1 day. They weren’t scrambling to find a quiet moment between the ceremony and the reception, because they’d already had one, days before, on their own terms.

I think we’ve built this idea that a wedding has to hold all of these different stories in one day. The romantic couples portraits, the candid family moments, the friendships, all of it.

But it isn’t the only way to do it.

Sentiment and Detail

A photographer who understands the account knows when to let it blur. The silk Taffe it doesn’t need to be in focus for you to feel the weight of it. Neither does the moment.

Every ruffle was placed with the understanding that it would move like this one day. On a real floor, in real light. Held by a real hand that had no idea it was completing the design.

This is the detail I think about most – the point of the neck line, stitched especially to hold its peak. It only makes sense up close. The right photographer knows how to capture it.

This is what the wedding day actually feels like. Not sharp, not still, but instead lit by a single candle and seen through something sheer. It’s all about the haze of emotion that falls on the bride and groom, with the feel of surrealism the day has finally arrived. taken in Toronto Canada by @acrewoodcs
