By Friday, I want you looking at your career and knowing what you’re doing next, without needing another three weeks of research and seventeen opinions first.

We’ll start with Career DNA. River’s going to get nosy about what you want, what you’ve tried, and what you’re convinced the problem is. She’ll identify what’s actually missing.

Then we spend the week working out what to DO about it.

You’ll build your Side Door plan around the work you want and what you need to get closer to it. We’ll look at who you could work with, what would make it worth their time, and how you could get paid while getting the experience, knowledge, relationships, or proof you need.

You’ll have your own work open while we’re together. There’ll be questions, live coaching, and probably a few moments where you realize you’ve been worrying about the wrong thing. I have those too. Usually after I’ve already spent money on it.

By Friday, you’ll have your first three actions and your 90-day plan.

We start today, and I’m so freaking excited to meet everyone.

I want to hear about the work you want. The part you can picture perfectly and the part where you have absolutely no clue how you’re supposed to get there.

Maybe you’re getting auditions, but for work you have no interest in doing forever. Maybe you’ve got a project that won’t move. Maybe the people who know your work love it, but somehow none of them are the people who could hire you.

Bring that version. You don’t have to make it sound impressive for me. I’m an actor too. I know how much can be happening behind “Yeah, things are good!”

This week, we’re going to work on what’s missing, build your Side Door plan, and map out your first three actions and the next 90 days.

You know the kind of work you’d love to be doing. The projects you watch and think, THAT. I want to do that.

But then you look at where you are now and have absolutely no idea how you’re supposed to get from here to there.

That’s plenty to bring to SDC.

You don’t need to arrive with a brilliant Side Door idea. You haven’t missed an assignment. I’m not expecting you to have solved the thing you’re coming to work on.

When I wanted my acting career back, I knew I needed people to see what I could do. I didn’t wake up one morning with the next year neatly mapped out. I had no current reel and no local contacts. That was already plenty to deal with.

We’ll start with what YOUR career needs. Then we’ll work through what you could create to get it and who could be part of that.

So come with the work you want, what you’ve tried, and the part that’s making you want to throw your laptop out the window. Preferably while you still have the laptop. We’re on Zoom.

I want you leaving SDC knowing what you’re going to do about your career when you close the laptop.

Because we’ve all sat through something fascinating, taken a ridiculous number of notes, and then gone back to doing exactly what we were doing before. I have notebooks that could testify.

So you’ll have your own work open while we’re together. We’ll look at the career you want, what’s missing, and what you could create to get it.

I’ll coach selected participants in live Hot Seats, and we’ll get into the details. Who are they trying to work with? What do those people need to see? Does the idea they’re excited about actually get them closer to the work they want?

And then somebody else says something about their career and you realize you’ve been doing the exact same thing. Slightly inconvenient when you were enjoying thinking this was somebody else’s problem. 😂

You’ll use what comes up to work on your own Side Door and your 90-day plan.

Bring the career you’re trying to build and the questions you can’t get a straight answer to. We’re going to spend the week working on them.

Anna got the stunt training she wanted, built a relationship with a stunt coordinator who hires actors, and earned money while doing it.

She didn’t start with stunt-industry connections. She had none.

Which is usually the point where we start thinking, well, I guess I need to figure out how to meet somebody before I can do anything.

Anna created a reason to work with the person she wanted to know. Nine actors paid to train with him, so his expertise was paid for, she got to train too, and the event brought her income.

After four events, people were coming to HER for stunt training in Germany.

I love that she got what her acting career needed without having to spend the next six months hoping somebody would introduce her to the right person.

That’s what we’re going to work on in SDC. What do you need to be able to do? Who could you learn from or work with? And what could you put together that makes sense for them too?

You don’t need to know them already. Come figure out who your career needs and what would give you a reason to work together.

Meg’s show is in pre-production, and I am having a very hard time being normal about it.

She’d been trying to sell that show for FIVE years. She’s an Emmy-nominated showrunner. Can we just take a second with that? An Emmy nomination, a show she wanted to make, and five years of trying to get the damn thing moving.

Inside the Side Door Challenge, she figured out what she was missing. Then she created a way to work with four industry professionals who had the knowledge and experience she needed to approach and package her show differently.

Now she’s back in the showrunner’s seat, in pre-production on the project she’d spent all that time trying to sell.

Annnnnd she earned more than $4,100 while getting those connections and that information.

Obviously, I love that she got paid. But her SHOW. The one she’d been trying to get made for half a decade. That’s what she wanted, and that’s what all of this was for.

By Friday, you’ll have a plan for the next 90 days and know the first three things you’re going to do.

Which means Monday doesn’t have to begin with you opening your laptop, checking for auditions, checking again, and wondering which part of your career you should be worried about today.

I know that routine. Somehow you can spend an entire morning “working on your career” and have a very hard time explaining what you actually did.

During SDC, we’re going to get specific about the work you want and what’s missing. Then we’ll work through your Side Door: what you could create, who you need to work with, and how it could get you the training, footage, relationships, or knowledge your career needs while earning money.

You’ll work on your own plan while we’re together, so when the week ends, you’ve got something to do with everything we talked about.

I’d like you to close Zoom on Friday knowing what comes next. Even if Monday’s first act is still coffee. Mine certainly will be.
