Agroecology (noun) 🌱

From agro-, relating to agriculture, and ecology, from the Greek oikos meaning “home” and logos meaning “study.”

Agroecology is an approach to farming that considers the relationships between soil, water, crops, biodiversity, climate and people—not as separate parts, but as one connected system.

And maybe there’s something human in that, too.

We spend so much time trying to fix one piece of our lives at a time, when sometimes the real shift comes from paying attention to the relationships between the pieces. What nourishes us, what drains us, what surrounds us, and what conditions allow us to grow.

That interconnected thinking also shows up in the work of @actionagainsthunger, where local knowledge, resources and environmental conditions can shape how communities strengthen their food systems.

Agroecology.

Plant that one in your vocabulary. 🌿

📍 Yemen: fighting has intensified in recent weeks, forcing thousands of people from their homes.

With support from @eu_echo, Action Against Hunger rapidly mobilized an emergency response in Khanfar and Zinjibar.

Our mobile health team is bringing primary care, nutrition support, vaccinations, psychological first aid, and referrals for specialized care directly to displaced families, closing critical gaps for people who have lost access to services.

Three years into the start of the crisis in Gaza, we see sustained damage to farmland, water systems, livelihoods, and access to food. This isn't simply a food shortage. The systems families depend on to feed themselves have been devastated, making life-threatening hunger harder to escape.

And children are bearing the brunt of this crisis. Right now, 72% of children under five aren't getting the nutrition they need at a critical stage of their growth, putting their health and development at risk.

"For a family, hunger means deciding what food they can put on the table today. It's a mother who goes without food so her children can eat, a father who can't afford to buy fresh food, or a child who can't sleep because they haven't eaten enough." — Natalia Anguera, Action Against Hunger’s Head of Operations, Middle East

For families in Gaza, hunger is still a daily threat.

The paradigm of emergency humanitarian response is undergoing a critical shift from reactive crisis management toward predictive, localized action. As acute malnutrition threatens nearly 50 million children globally aged under 5, relying solely on traditional, long-range early warning mechanisms leaves aid operations exposed to erratic and inefficient deployments.

Speaking at Devex Impact House @ UNGA81, Tim Staffa, chief of staff at @actionagainsthunger, highlighted how high-resolution predictive analytics such as the MERIAM modeling tool is delivering granular, monthly forecasts to help local partners preempt spikes in child undernutrition.

To optimize scarce humanitarian resources, Staffa stressed the necessity of a paradigm shift: "By being able to see crises before they peak, we can pause, reflect, think about … how do we allocate the scarcer resources we have to achieve the goals that we're setting out to do?"

Asho trained as a tailor years ago. What she didn’t have was a sewing machine. 🧵

The mother of six lives in Diilin, where most families depend on livestock and have few other ways to earn a living. So she joined a local Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) supported by Action Against Hunger, where members save money together and can borrow small amounts when they need to.

After nine months of saving with her group, Asho added a small loan from Amal Bank. That was enough to open a small shop and finally buy a sewing machine.

Now, with two sources of income, her family is better protected from climate shocks and no longer depends only on their livestock.

She’s paying school fees for three of her children and putting more nutritious food on the table. Savings groups give families a reliable way to save and borrow, and with access to credit, a skill like Asho’s becomes a business. by @actionagainsthunger

The world is facing an unprecedented global food crisis.

Last week at #UNGA81, our Associate Director of Advocacy, Michelle Brown, shared three takeaways on how we end world hunger:

1️⃣ Work together: no one can end hunger alone
2️⃣ Act early: we know when crises will hit, so we can act before they do
3️⃣ Address conflict-driven hunger: all parties must respect international humanitarian law

Now it’s time to turn commitments into action. The communities where we work depend on us. by @actionagainsthunger

Action Against Hunger is beginning to see what could become the worst El Niño-related crisis in four decades across Honduras and Guatemala.

In Chiquimula, part of Guatemala's Dry Corridor, most households recently reported losing most of this year's corn harvest to the drought. Community leader José, who lives in Chiquimula, had already lived through a season of crop failure before this crisis intensified. "I keep going back to them until things get done," he says of his advocacy for his community.

Cash assistance from Action Against Hunger helped his family get through the leanest months. As droughts intensify, that support becomes more critical.

In Zamboanga City, Philippines, residents are turning plastic bottles into floating traps that catch trash before it reaches the mangroves, the coastal forests that protect their homes from storms and flooding.

This #climateweek, we’re sharing how communities in Zamboanga and Malabon are restoring those forests through the EARTH project, with support from Action Against Hunger and our partners. As of June, nearly 3 hectares (about 7 acres) of new mangroves had been planted, with 169 community members taking part. Communities have also opened a new waste sorting facility, and they’re working with local universities to test simple ways to clean the water, like filters made from bamboo and coconut fiber.

For years, Dahab Hashi Aden carried the weight of providing for her seven children alone in Ethiopia's Somali Region.

She worked hard to support her family, but sometimes the money wasn't enough. There were days when her children went to bed hungry, and moments when she feared she couldn't save her malnourished son.

Everything changed when Dahab joined a Village Savings and Loan Association through our SheCanManage project, empowering women to build economic resilience.

Today, all of her children are back in school; she's growing her business, and she's planning to build a home for her family.

"Financial security is power. Now I feel like I control my future."

Across the project, 200 women are building savings, investing in businesses, and creating brighter futures for their families.

Most humanitarian nutrition responses still begin once a crisis is already unfolding. Predictive analytics could help shift that timeline months earlier.

At Devex Impact House @ UNGA, in partnership with @actionagainsthunger, Tim Staffa, chief of staff at @actionagainsthunger, will explore how the organization’s MERIAM initiative uses statistical and machine learning models to forecast acute malnutrition prevalence and caseloads up to 12 months in advance.

The discussion will look at how this initiative of longer-range forecasting can help governments, donors, and humanitarian organizations release funding earlier, plan services before peak need, and better target limited resources.
