In celebration of this yearโ€™s International Day of the Girl Child, we reflect on the impact of our work and reaffirm our commitment to supporting women and girls in Afghanistan, championing their rights, and helping create opportunities for a better future.

Girls over 12 remain barred from formal school.

In 2025 our home-based schools grew from 14 to 20 locations in four provinces, reaching 411 girls.

More than 80% passed their exams. ๐Ÿ“š

As we settle into the new month, we take a moment to reflect on the highlight of September: Blooming Afghanistan: Art Resists โ€“ Hope Blooms. ๐ŸŒผ

This powerful exhibition at the UN Office in Geneva was a true testament to the creativity and talent of Afghan artists and students, who came together to promote cultural exchange and education as a fundamental right for sustainable peace and development. ๐ŸŽจ

The artwork on display was a stunning representation of the country's rich cultural heritage, and served as a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting and promoting education, particularly for girls, in order to build a brighter future for all.

๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ’ช We call on States, UN entities, and donors to prioritize and fund girls' education, as it is a crucial step towards achieving gender equality, reducing poverty, and fostering sustainable development.

๐ŸŒŸ Moreover, we urge governments to ensure that education is inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic background.

๐ŸŒŽ We would like to extend our gratitude to our partners for their invaluable support in making this exhibition possible, and for their tireless efforts to promote education as a fundamental human right. ๐Ÿ™

This week, the world marked #WorldHumanitarianDay, honoring people who keep showing up in the hardest circumstances.

In #Afghanistan, Action for Development is focused on protecting a hard-won national achievement: a midwifery workforce built from just 467 midwives in 2001 to nearly 35,000 trained graduates by 2021.

This is humanitarian work in practice: not only responding to crisis, but preserving the people and skills that make recovery possible.

In Afghanistan, womenโ€™s rights and opportunities are being stripped away. For many women, midwifery remains one of the few professions they can pursue, and it is a lifeline in a country facing one of the worldโ€™s highest maternal and infant mortality rates.
Through our partnership with One Day's Wages and Action for Development, #TogetherWomenRise is supporting midwives like Roshina with the training and resources they need to save lives and care for their communities.

It was an inspiring and important conversation. We are deeply grateful to our speakers and everyone who joined us to listen, learn, and stand in solidarity with women and girls in Afghanistan. The conversation may be over, but the workโ€”and our commitmentโ€”continues.

#repost

For nearly five years, women and girls in Afghanistan have faced one of the most severe rollbacks of rights in modern history. Restrictions have reached nearly every aspect of daily life, from education and employment to healthcare, freedom of movement, and public participation.

Yet Afghan women continue to lead, care for their communities, and fight for a more just future.

Join #TogetherWomenRise for a conversation with the leaders working alongside them every day:

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Zahra Nader, Executive Director and Editor-in-Chief, @zantimes_ (Moderator)
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Zuhra Dadgar-Shafiq, @actionfordevelopment, implementing partner of @onedayswages
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Sana Mahmud, @freetorunngo
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Nancy Newman, @intlangelorg (IANGEL)
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ Dr. Susan Antolin, @womenforafghanwomen

Together, they'll discuss how organizations are adapting to expand maternal healthcare, strengthen mental health, advance women's rights, and provide life-saving support to women and girls despite extraordinary challenges.

Join us on Wednesday, August 12 at 12 pm ET / 9 am PT for this important conversation.

Five years ago, the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan.

Since then, communities across the country have faced an escalating humanitarian crisisโ€”from restrictions on women and girlsโ€™ rights and a collapsing health system to mass deportations of Afghans from neighboring countries.

Through it all, local organizations have continued to show up.

As @globalgiving prepares to make another round of grants from our Afghanistan Emergency Fund this fall, we are highlighting five incredible partners who have continued to make a difference over the last five years:

๐Ÿ“š @sahareducation is creating pathways for girls and women to continue their education and build skills despite ongoing restrictions.

๐Ÿฅ Action for Development is helping keep essential healthcare available, including maternal and newborn care.

๐Ÿค @bamyanfoundation is providing emergency assistance to forcibly returned families and supporting community-led underground schools for girls.

๐Ÿฆฟ Development & Ability Organization (DAO) is providing prosthetics, physiotherapy, psychosocial support, and other services for people with disabilities and survivors of conflict.

๐ŸŽ’ @aidafghanistanforeducation is helping children move from working in the streets back into classrooms while supporting their families with food assistance.

Five years on, our partners continue to adapt, build, and care for their communities. Stand in solidarity with them and support locally led work in Afghanistan at the link in the comments. by @actionfordevelopment
