If your child only does things that come easily, what happens when something doesn’t?
Being a beginner gives them a chance to practice staying curious when they feel frustrated and accepting help when they’d rather hide.

You can help with a few simple questions:
“What part feels tricky?”
“What could you try differently?”
“Would you like some help?”

And when they improve, help them notice: “Remember when you couldn’t do that yet?”
That’s evidence they can carry into the next unfamiliar thing. They don’t have to arrive knowing how. They can trust themselves to learn.

Save this for the next time you hear, “I’m bad at this.” by @actionkaratemanayunk

The people your child is surrounded by teaches them something about who they need to be to belong.

What is theirs teaching them?

Swipe for what to look for in their circle—and questions that help you see how those friendships really feel. by @actionkaratemanayunk

You can tell your child “You’ve got this” a thousand times.
But there’s something special about the moment they get to say, “I did it.”

Especially when “it” involved shaky legs, a forgotten move, and a very serious discussion about whether they wanted to go out there at all.

They leave with evidence:
“I was nervous, and I tried.”
“I made a mistake, and I kept going.”
“I needed help, and somebody was there.”

Those experiences give them something to draw on when the next hard thing comes along—a new school, a tough conversation, another chance after a disappointment.

We can’t promise our kids that everything will go well.
But we can help them build reasons to believe they’ll find their way through.

When your child wants to quit because something feels hard, they may be one small breakthrough away from discovering, “I can figure this out.”

Letting them walk away too quickly can mean missing that experience: asking for help, trying a different way, and seeing their own progress.

They deserve the chance to surprise themselves. Sometimes that starts with you saying, “Let’s give it another try. I’m here to help.” by @actionkaratemanayunk

You can't control who your child's friends are... or can you?

At Action, kids practice more than karate together. They practice being good partners. They learn to help someone who’s struggling, celebrate someone else’s progress, and treat each other with respect.

When those things become part of the routine, kids get a place to belong—and examples of what a good friend looks like.

And your child gets to become that friend for someone else. by @actionkaratemanayunk

A child can walk onto the mat hoping to win a trophy and leave with something they needed even more:
A little more trust in themselves.

They found out their legs could feel shaky and still carry them forward.
That a mistake didn’t have to be the end.
That people could cheer for them even when things didn’t go perfectly.

Next time something feels intimidating—a new classroom, a difficult conversation, a room where they don’t know anybody—they’ll have this experience to draw on.

Being nervous won’t feel quite so much like a reason to stop.
They might think, “Okay. I know this feeling. I can take the next step.”

That’s something to bring home that's bigger than a trophy. by @actionkaratemanayunk

Before you rush to fix it, ask yourself: “What support would help my child take the next step?”

Sometimes they need a hug. Sometimes a hint. Sometimes a little more time.

You can be their safe place while giving them room to discover what they’re capable of. by @actionkaratemanayunk

If you have a specific academic concern, absolutely bring it up. But save time for these:
1. Who do they spend time with at lunch or recess?
- Who do they connect with, and do they seem included?
2. What do they do when the work feels too hard?
- Knowing the pattern gives you something specific to practice at home.
3. Who do they turn to when they’re upset?
- If they aren’t reaching out, ask how you can work together to help them feel comfortable doing so.
4. When during the day are they most settled and engaged?
- Look for patterns around transitions, energy, and activities. Those observations may help you rethink their routine.
5. How do they respond when they get something wrong?
- Can they try again? Do they hide their work or get frustrated? Ask what helps them recover so you can reinforce it at home.
6. Have you seen them help someone?
- You may discover a quiet act of kindness your child never thought to mention.
7. What’s one thing we could do at home to support them?
- Make it specific and manageable. Write it down, and agree on how you’ll follow up.

Give the teacher room to answer. Then choose one thing you learned and make one change at home.

The value of the meeting is in what you do afterward. by @actionkaratemanayunk

Sometimes, believing in themselves starts with a glance at you.
“Can I do this?”
“Are you still there?”
And you get to answer with the reassurance that they have someone in their corner.

When your child is nervous, try giving them just enough support to take the next step.
Remind them how to begin.
Encourage them with a smile or a thumbs up.
Give them time to find their way.

Then, when they run back into your arms, help them recognize what THEY did:
“You were nervous, and you started.”
“You got stuck, and you kept going.”
“How did it feel to finish?”

“I believe in you” matters. So does giving them experiences they can look back on and say, “I did that.” by @actionkaratemanayunk

One day, you won’t be there to fix it.
But the voice you’ve helped them build will be.

“I can try again.”
“I can ask for help.”
“This is hard, and I can handle it.”

Every time you stay close without solving everything, you help your child build trust in themselves.

That confidence lasts longer than the relief of having you fix it. by @actionkaratemanayunk

Save this for your next parent-teacher conference.

Their teacher has watched them for six hours a day and knows things about them that no report card will tell you. Here’s what to ask to get the full picture:

1. Who do they sit with at lunch?
The answer tells you more about their year than any grade will.

2. What do they do when the work is too hard for them?
Their strategy for being stuck is the single most useful thing you can learn in this meeting, because it is the same strategy they will use at fifteen.

3. Who do they go to when they are upset?
You are hoping the answer is an adult, or a particular friend.
If the teacher says they do not go to anyone, that is worth knowing now rather than in three years.

4. When in the day are they most settled?
Some children are gone by one o'clock. Some do not switch on until after lunch.
Knowing this tells you how to most effectively plan their day.

5. What do they do when they get something wrong?
Their relationship with their own mistakes is being built right now.

6. Have you seen them help anyone?
The answer will tell you something about who they are when you are not in the room.

7. What would you like me to do at home?
Teachers spend the whole evening giving information and almost never get asked what they actually need. Ask it last and mean it. Then write the answer down in front of them.

Pick the one answer that surprised you most and change one thing at home because of it this month. That is the entire value of the meeting. by @actionkaratemanayunk
