“DOPE ON THE TABLE.”

If you’ve watched HBO’s The Wire, you know the idea: a big bust, a display of everything seized, and something impressive for the evening news.

A visible result that lets the department declare victory while the underlying problem keeps going.

Watching LAPD’s operation on the Sixth Street Bridge, that’s what came to mind.

Last weekend, it was the car takeover crackdown. This weekend, rows of impounded minibikes. Helicopters overhead. News crews covering the scene. Another round of headlines.

To me, this looked like a huge show for the cameras.

“We approached this operation with an abundance of care and caution.” - right, batons on kids. So much caring.

Let’s see that same abundance of care put toward giving people somewhere to go.

Work with the car clubs and riders. Create affordable, legal spaces for meets, controlled burnout and donut competitions, and minibike racing over 660 or 1,320 feet. Properly run events with safety
requirements, barriers, and room for spectators.

There are examples to build on. Texas has hosted organized minibike drag racing at Yello Belly. Iowa’s I-29 Speedway has a dedicated burnout pit and drag strip. Other communities have found ways to make
room for this culture.

Los Angeles could put serious effort into making those opportunities accessible here. Instead, they just throw police at it.

And if DEA agents were there too, what exactly was the Drug Enforcement Administration doing at a minibike rideout?

These communities have builders, mechanics, racers, parents, and kids learning skills and finding something they care about. Bring them into the conversation. Give them a stake in making it safer.

I want to see the city measure success by how many people it helps move into safer spaces.

How many bikes fit into a helicopter shot tells us very little about what happens next. by @activegurlz
