On Saturday, September 19, we celebrate the life and legacy of Louise Bennett-Coverley — Miss Lou, the beloved poet, performer, folklorist and cultural icon whose work transformed the place of Jamaican language in literature and on the stage.

Curated by Poet Laureate of Jamaica, Professor Kwame Dawes, this staging will feature readings by Joylene Alexander-Hall, Shawna-Kae Burns, Desmond Dennis, Alexandra Gregory and Joan Andrea Hutchinson, along with musical composition by Seretse Small.

More than a century after her birth, her voice remains unmistakably present. Join us as we celebrate 107 years of Miss Lou and the extraordinary legacy she gave Jamaica and the world.

“To A Poet”

There is a lovely noise about your name,
Above the shoutings of the city clear,
More than a moment’s merriment, whose claim
Will greater grow with every mellowed year.

The people will not bear you down the street,
Dancing to the strong rhythm of your words,
The modern kings will throttle you to greet
The piping voice of artificial birds.

But rare lonely spirits, even mine,
Who love the immortal music of all days,
Will see the glory of your trailing line,
The bedded beauty of your haunting lays.

“To A Poet” by Claude McKay — Published in the collection Harlem Shadows (Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1922).

What was witnessed at the 🎭 Tentastic Theatre Festival was a deeply moving exploration of sisterhood, identity, and the ways Black women carry both beauty and burden.

✨ Curls, Kinks & Coils ✨

This intimate, character-driven drama followed three Black sisters navigating distinct yet interconnected traumas while living under the same roof. Bound by blood but divided by age, perspective, and emotional experience, they grappled with silence, tension, and the unspoken wounds that shape their relationships.

Using hair as both a metaphor and a framework, Curls, Kinks & Coils examined how Black women are often conditioned to contain, style, and manage pain while presenting strength to the world. Through powerful performances and emotional honesty, the piece celebrated resilience while giving voice to the fractures often hidden beneath the surface.
